This business plan is a great example of unintended consequences. Starting from an irrational position (I only want to use cash) we get a number of weird consequences. Ditch the original constraint and just get a bank account and a card machine.. Complexity just increases risk.

the person who said that they pay to rent the space off of you has not returned!
Let just forget the whole idea then for now! Think i will just have to guide people up the street to the nearest cash machine
In which case they will just go to the next shop along that does take cards.

You cannot run your business without a bank account.

We were tied for lager/bitter but free for everything else.

The cash machine was originally through the cash machine company and brewery but the contract was then changed to us and the cash machine company. I cant remember the name of the company though.
So the pub cons where ripping you off on the larger and bitter then changed the cotract to ripping you off on the machine; is that right???

Where the cans and bottles tied?

Welcome to the UKBF. Well I have to say I have never heard of cash machines you fill up yourself so maybe I am well out of touch with this sector. However back in the day of commercial property management I had huge deals with the cash machine operators, you basically rent them the space to place a machine, they need internet, and they service and run them.

As re-filling machines goes this was done by one of the many security companies you see in the UK high streets. Be interesting to see what other think on the topic
    hear it was

Its not like that at all. its a community hub or will be. it will not be set in a town city centre for urban yuppies either that are happy to be rip off with bad value for money so long as it all singing and dancing lights to the product. it is for regular people that live locally

why not is it a crime or something?

Wow. That turned didnt it. Im not sure what I have said to piss you off. I have answered your question.

To answer the question regarding the beer - they were not ripping us off. We voluntarily signed the contract after negotiation. They charged us what was agreed increased in line with inflation/beer duty there after. We paid more than we would have done had we got the same beer from the cash and carry. We could have walked away if the deal did not work for us.

The bottled beer was tied. Soft drinks/wine/spirits/food/games machines etc were not tied.

As for the cash machine, we actually got a good contract on that. The brewery agreed a contract based on 80 pubs. We got the same contract with just 1 pub which is far better than we would have got if we had gone direct to them. To be honest, in the end we didnt bother filling it up and just unplugged it. People preferred to just pay on their cards it saved them a transaction fee.

On a side note with regards to using cash only. I have to be honest, ever since I was about 20 (20 years ago now), I have always just used my card. Everyone used to laugh at me, but its not uncommon now.

The only exception was on a night out, chewing gum and cashback for the pubs/bars. I never use cash. Nothing against it, but its easier to use my card. I have had to leave shops that are cash only, where they tell me there is a cash machine over the road, its rare I use it and I definitely would not pay a card fee to spend cash because the shop did not accept card - thats their problem not mine.

Because your landlord, insurance, utilities, HMRC, local council, suppliers and everyone else won’t take cash as payment.

Consider also those less fortunate than you may be issued with prepaid cards that are loaded by DWP to pay for food and other essentials. They won’t be carrying cash.

So thats the big scam the transaction fee!

Thats right! Same hear. charging to withdraw cash is a rip off scam and would suit the pub cons just right up there own asses

Well i disagree with you on every party you have mentioned above there!

Wow; so you are saying the DWP issue pre loaded cards right?

I have an ASDA pre paid loaded card. You go to the kios at ASDA. stick 51 quid on it and they put 50 quid on your card. Its a Master Card. So I can shop for things on sites like feebay where the seller is to far away and item is to small less value to make it worth while collecting and hence paying cash on collection

    ✅ Bottom-line: Is it a good deal?

    • If your shop has strong foot traffic, many cash users, and no competing ATM nearby, then the upside is real.
    • If many people already use a free ATM around the corner, or your shop isn’t in a busy location, the revenue may not cover your costs.
    • The hosting / partnership route reduces risk and upfront cost, but your share of profits is lower.

HMRC makes it difficult for you to can pay taxes using cash, but it can be done.
What about utilities, insurance, wholesalers? And I doubt a landlord would want to receive the rent in bags of pound rounds.

Running a shop without an bank account is on the very edge of what's possible. Cash only means it's likely to elicit investigation as it could be seen a front for illegal activity (like the plethora of Turkish barbers and dodgy convenience stores).

All will accept cash as the OP has said. It is all down to whether you are dealing with bricks and mortar businesses, which many businesses still do. Some insurance brokers have bricks and mortar businesses also landlords, and wholesalers. If you pay utilities by top up card, the cards can be topped up using cash.

It all can be done quite legally as long as you keep your books in order (bookkeepers and accountants usually accept cash) and pay the taxes that are due. Insisting on paying HMRC is cash might lead to an investigation, but if you are not doing anything illegal that will come to nothing.

@Gecko001 - do you actually run your business cash only? Whilst it technically might be possible to do all you suggest is it really worth all the effort?

You are also likely to end up with higher tariffs as the best deals for utilities are direct debit only.

We were talking about this whole concept last night down the pub.

Imaging this community hub with everyone buying stuff with loose change. At the end of the week you have a safe full of pound coins. You would need to do a bank run to cash up and get folding money in return. The banks will charge you for this service. You then use the bunch of fivers to pay your bills which means a run to the post office (if you can find one locally) with a bunch of paper invoices (that you had to print out).

Or just open a bank account and have a sum up machine on the counter. A far simpler and more practical way to run a business.

It's possible @Cash is King wants to stay off grid as much as possible but running a business means anonymity is sacrificed. All the licensing, insurance, utilities and other services would put your name in a whole load of databases.

And of course unless @Cash is King is going to run the business on their own and never take a day off there will be staff to pay which adds another layer of complexity if you are doing cash only.

    Its not a con.
The cash machine used electricity. It also resulted in higher insurance premiums (one of the questions on the insurance policy was whether or not we have a cash machine). Why would we pay the electric and higher premiums if it is not paying for itself?

But there was no requirement to use it as we had a card machine.

We did not sell canned lager but if we did, yes it was tied. Bitter/lager/stout was tied. Nothing else was.

Pub Companies are not ideal. But they are a business. nobody forced us to buy the business and nobody forced customers to come to us. The pub company gave us the ability to buy a business that was underperforming, ramp it up and earn some good money. The Pub Co made money on the back of it and customers enjoyed having a pub that we made safe, engaged with customers and gave them some good nights.

No blackmail, no coercion, no conning. Some people thought we were too expensive and never came back. But a lot of people did come back. It was not the brewery that put us out of business, it was changes the govt made. But thats life, things change and we did not adapt. It was a good lesson.

Again simple and easy, cash on delivery or collection

It would be far easyer and no cost the exchange coins for notes and visor versor with other businesses

Again its quite simple really paying staff with cash

No it was the rip off beer prices that killed 90% of the job!
And all these little clauses in the contract of cource, and no doubt more insurance
Yup just another con to me, which is why i wont have anything to do with them
