Are you aware of any business mentors that provide free advice to business startup groups?
What sort of mentoring? What type of business startup?

Mentors come in all shapes and sizes with a range of knowledge and skills. Knowing exactly what sort of help you need will help us make suggestions.

I am a qualified bookkeeper and need advice on how to market myself.
If you ask specific questions here, you will get some great responses.

When you wrote your business plan, how did you define the process for getting clients?

    Hi Folks

I am a qualified bookkeeper and need advice on how to market myself.

The starting point with marketing is to ask yourself these 3 questions

    1. Who is my absolute, 100% ideal customer?

    2. What specific need or desire am I meeting?

    3. Why will they use me rather than another?

It takes real time and thought to address these questions properly - it was save you a load of money on your marketing budget!

So as to take a leaf from your own book Mark, how would you answer these questions yourself?

Agree with the replies above. You’ll get plenty of good, practical input on here, but it really depends on how specific you can be about what you need.

At the moment it’s quite broad. “Mentoring” can mean anything from basic startup guidance through to sales, marketing, pricing, systems, etc. If you can narrow that down, you’ll get much better, more targeted advice.

If you’re looking for more “back to basics” support, there are also some good free options:

    • Local Growth Hubs (e.g. Gloucestershire Growth Hub and equivalents across the UK)
    • Bank-led startup programmes and workshops
    • Local councils / enterprise partnerships

They won’t replace hands-on, paid support, but they’re a good starting point.

Given you’ve said you’re a bookkeeper looking to market yourself, I’d suggest you’ll get more value here by asking very specific questions (e.g. “how do I get my first 5 clients?” or “how do I differentiate from other bookkeepers?” etc).

What’s the one thing you’re struggling with most right now — lead generation, positioning, or converting enquiries?
