Best way of engaging ad-hoc workers?

Hi,

I'm interested to hear peoples advice on how best to engage ad-hoc workers. I am looking into starting a business where, at the beginning, I am likely to need assistance on an ad-hoc basis. A day here and a day there. What would be the best way of employing/engaging this type of worker and how would I go about finding them. The work would require someone in person not remote. Thank you.

There are many agencies, who would ensure that you are legally compliant (in terms of tax and checking them out)

Thanks - although presumably they will charge a fee on top of the workers wages? Any idea how much that normally is? My concern with using an agency is the standard of worker. Ideally i'd like to use the same person/people so I can train them with view to hopefully being able to give them more permenant work.

What sort of assistance? Can they work remotely or you need to be present?

If you don’t want to pay an agency you can spend hours and hours on recruitment sites looking for suitable candidates. Or post on freelancer sites. Or post a job advert on multiples sites.

The quality of worked will depend partly on the skill level/rate of pay and partly on the frequency of the work.

When I drove for an agency, some people were virtually staff in a specific company

Zero hours contracts are on their way out. Turn it around, I'm a good, loyal, reliable worker who wants to earn money a few days a week - why am I going to wait around hoping that you will offer me a day or 2 here and there?

What sort of work is it?
Can you use sites like people per hour and get someone who’s self employed to do some invoiced freelance work until you have enough work to take on someone on a part time contract.
If they need training, can you get someone full time on an apprentice scheme and train them whilst they support you? Need to understand how skilled the work is really.
I can’t see you getting anyone “ad hock hours” unless agency or some subcontract type situation.

If this for your house clearance business you can find local muscle for hire anywhere. They will probably want paying in cash.

Don't forget to factor in Employers Liability Insurance - this is a legal requirement (like car insurance - something you must have!)
