Ok so i need to sign up for this MTD thing some time soon to do my next vat return.

I only went VAT registered in April but was registered about 10 years ago for a previous business and at that time I just kept receipts then every three months totaled everything up and made my return. It seems now things are a little more complicated!

Simple question really, which is the easiest to use free software to make my VAT return that will comply with whatever the HMRC now require?

Great, sounds simple which is what i need.

Is there some sort of excel template as I'll be starting from scratch. Currently i just total up my invoices, receipts etc make a note of the totals and then enter them in the relevant places on the hmrc vat return form. I don't really use any sort of spread sheet apart from making a summary / breakdown of my totals on a word doc.

All you do is name some of the cells in a blank worksheet box_1, box_2 etc and enter your values for a particular quarter.
The website explains with short videos what to do. Have a go and then ask any questions if you need to. You'll be relieved at how easy it is.

Agree with @JEREMY HAWKE , pay for decent software and save yourself a whole load of work. The cost of the application is tax deductible as well. Or do as I do a pay an accountant - mine more than saves me the cost of his fee.

As the package author, it's 100PcVatFreeBridge and can be found at https://www.comsci.co.uk/100PcVatFreeBridge.html

It's a free forever Windows, Mac or Linux digital link compliant bridging application. (Although it does prompt you to make a donation either to support the development or to any charity of your choice).

There are also example Excel templates available for download on the same site.

With MTD there's no lock in to any one provider and nothing to stop you authorising several different solutions concurrently. Although, you can only submit a VAT return once and have to follow the HMRC procedure to correct any errors.

Try it to see if you like it. Several thousand happy users at the moment:

Agree with @JEREMY HAWKE as well. Do you have a bookkeeping software solution. Is so and it does not do VAT submission change it. If you don't have one get one. I use FreeAgent which does a great job. If the VAT rules change they will fix it - modifying spreadsheets for something like this is a risk I will not take.

Yup, depending on your business and the volume of transaction, I would always use a package like Kashflow or Clearbooks, especially if doing lots of invoices.

I dont know if it'll be the best option for you without knowing much more about your business but if you bank with RBS, NatWest, Ulster bank or Mettle FreeAgent is free and very good
