Best antivirus for 1Gb netbook?

Dawg

Light, effective, preferably free, (no biz use), on Asus 100 1PX (Atom N450 1.6GHz, 1Gb, 160Gb, LAN, WLAN, Camera, Win 7 Starter)

For slightly technophobe designer's new toy.
 
I know AVG always has good reviews - but I'm always of the mindset that you get what you pay for. Not sure I trust free software to protect my PC!!

Personally, I use McAfee - find it dead simple to use and doesn't use too many resources when doing a scan

AVG killed my netbook, although the specs were lower than the OPs. In the end I went with Avast.

My favourite having tried loads of others is ESET NOD32, light on resources, does the job and doesn't keep popping up telling me it's doing the job!

I'll tell her NOD and she'll go Avast, (She's a designer, poor love. Spent all her folding on poncy Mac gear and a netbook. Will kern for cash... :))

As long as she is not a serial pirate, or messing about too much in dodgy areas of t'internet, a simple AVG installation (amended to auto heal) and a periodical run of Spybot/Malwarebytes will keep her clear.

All the machines that come into us full of carp are usually because of lax clients, not the softwares fault at all.

If you are sticking Spybot on for her though, don't install that annoying tea-timer stuff, just leave it to be run by the user.

Obviously if she was wanting to spend a few quid, NOD32 would be the dawgs balearics :D

I used to be all for the free AVG version but Microsoft Security Essentials has recently taken the crown in my eyes. It's lighter and less in your face in regards to no start up popups etc. It's also very good at it's job and free.

McAfee is good, but the resources drain drove me nuts and it like made my mid-spec PC run at a crawl :eek: Had 512 mb of RAM too!

AVG ain't bad, but even with updates, its not perfect.

Kapersky is 'good looking' but to complicated to use/deleted quarantined infections.

Norton is now officially naff, once it was king, now its naff.

The best IS MicrosoftSecurityEssentials - and it won't bleed your wallet dry, as its 100% free.

nooo don't use macfee or nortons... You will regret it loads and loads and loads.

Personally I would use Avast or Avira as they are lightweight. I use avast on my netbook and it runs spotlessly.

I've used AVG on a number of machines over several years and never had a problem.

McAfee and Norton just don't cut it. They really slow things down and use masses of resources.

avg misses a LOT of viruses, it's slow to be updated and it's not as good as it once was. I would double check your system with avast or avira ;)

Ditto, HOWEVER I had a very hard-to-trace bug after upgrading (fresh install) to Windows 7 from XP. Sometimes file saves from Word would fail with 'unable to access file' or a similar error. I tore most of my hair out trying to find out what was causing it, and after [very] much searching found out that it was NOD32. Something is different about the way antivirus hooks into Windows 7 to scan real time file access - I forget the exact details now. Anyway, disabling NOD solved the problem. Upgrading to a newer version also solved it for a while but it then came back again very intermittently. THe result is that I let my NOD32 licenses run out, and switched to MSE and have had no problems since. MSE also seems to use fewer system resources than NOD which felt to me as if it had been getting slower over the years (subjective!).

Anyway, NOD32 is a great antivirus but for me it made sense to switch to Microsoft Security Essentials.

Mcafee is too resource hungry for a netbook. Norton is the worst AV ever. I would give MS Essentials or Avast a go. The best AV is easily Kaspersky or NOD32 but NOD32 is quite expensive.

Never in a million years: its at least 3 times the size of AVG (or AVAST). It will cripple performance when its running "in the background". Worst of all it will not detect "new" attacks that both AVG and AVAST do. We get it free with our O2 broadband and I'm very close to uninstalling it. Hope this helps- if it does click thanks.
