Hi all
My first ever post...

I'm in the process of building a website for my new business idea

but I don't know the first thing about SEO. Any tips or pointers for beginners would be appreciated.

Was told by my SEO guy last week that Google Chrome will help me realise how well my site is doing in SEO terms? Is that right, and if so, how?

Research your market, figure out what people who could use your services search for, optimise your pages for these search phrases, build links to your pages to show you an authority. That's it, simples :)

Would agree about SEOBook - good stuff.

I've always got SEO Site Tools Chrome Extension on my browser. It won't show you what to put in to your site; but will help you analyse competitors sites etc., and will help you analyse your own site after you've written it.

I've been an avid reader of SEOmoz for a while as well, dig back through the blog there and there's enough information to get anyone started on the subject. They also free ebooks on the subject (I think)

Firefox is chock full of cool tools. But first - I'd brush up on your SEO knowledge. You can own a site that looks all singing, all dancing but - unless you've half an idea, it's a tough world wide web. A hungry one too ;)

My advice would be to concentrate on your business and hire a SEO professional.

Get "The Art of SEO" by Rand Fishkin and others.

It's the most comprehensive book on SEO that there is, a SEO bible if you will :)

Be careful of canonicalization whatever you do, most people starting out in SEO don't realise the issues with it.

it's to do with google preferring certain url's like www's over non www's, or index pages over pages you prefer because there are no 301 redirects in place or you several versions of your homepage running (index pages etc...)
I believe you need set up your site so you only have one version of your homepage running, set up the 301 redirects (if you haven't done so already)

With regards to SEO, here are some of the things to remember:

On-Page Optimization - it deals with the proper use of title tags, meta tags, h1/h2 tags, description, content, robots.txt and sitemap.

Off-Page Optimization - it deals with creating quality of inbound links.

Hey

There is a free beginners guide to SEO linked in my signature and google also publish a basic guide. I would start with something like this that covers the essentials in 20 or so pages. Then, once you are up and running and want to fine tune you can move onto the Art of SEO book or one of the many good books out there.

But... that said, experience counts for a lot here so if you don't want to pay for it all then maybe do the basics yourself, then hire a pro to review and advise, then action said advice and hire a pro for a further montly review.

There is much you can do and I firmly believe a well educated client is the best kind so get a grip on the basics and use a pro for the nitty gritty.
