What are back links and how do I get them for my website?
Try to keep it not too technical thanks..:D

When some other website on the internet posts http://www.yoursite.com

That is a backlink to yoursite.

You can get them by posting articles on a blog or other web 2.0 property, social bookmarks, stories on social news sites, social networks like Twitter and Facebook, and all the other stuff in that link max posted above ;)

Or fix the site so you are optimised for the keywords your potential customers use. That way you won't even need backlinks.

(this is a follow on from your vistaprint comments - the one site optimisastion is pretty gunky but you are stuffed because vistraprint won't allow you to fix it)

The important aspect of back links now is the intention showed when that link was placed.

1. If on a non-related site blog or anything else it could be negative to your site.

2. If on a related site but not in a related context ie large link section it's not going to be of much or any value.

3. If on a site of good standing placed with editorial in context it may be of benefit. That benefit depends on a number of things too many to go into here and some neither I or anyone else outside google search know about.

I would say forget about backlinks for SEO they can take care of themselves if you have content. Put your time into content and backlinks that might generate direct traffic. These might be advertising but don't have to be could be a link in your email signiture or forums, facebook, twitter and social bookmarking sites perhaps.

You can do guest blogging which can help in getting back links and also interacting valuable information on forums then you can gain backlinks from other websites.

few people say to buy backlinks but they might be bad links and google might 'google slap' you and you loose your google position and rank etc so i wouldnt really buy any

It's a very low competition set of keywords. They already have a web presence so a well optimised site is all they need.

I would say forget about backlinks for SEO they can take care of themselves if you have content.

Not unless every small biz website (SBW) has the following:

1. SBW has a unique viral technology it can call upon. (Viral Tool) To my knowledge only 2 sites in the world have this capability that actually works eg: Facebook and Google's toolbar. Very expensive to accomplish.

2. The SBW is a unique self-generating traffic magnet (Virally SEO'd), this too is impossible as the funds required is probably not available and/or the idea not existing to business owners.

Just because a website has content, dont mean squat, as content doesn't mean the site has traffic to shout about. A website might have 1000 pages of content, but unless those pages can be SEO'd, they wont do any good as they'll never be found/seen by the masses, thus pointless any link being placed on it - that page will never go viral.

Most SBW's dont have 1000 pages of content to play with... they dont have that luxury.

Think of backlinks like votes for a webpage.
The more quality and quantity of links, the more popular it is.
The more popular, the more likely google will recommend it.

If you google "wiki pagerank" it will explain it well.

The true measure of a site's popularity is decided by its users. Eg: you might only have 500 links, but its the visitors or following every month that determine usage and if they return.

Guest-blogging is as mentioned earlier a useful weapon in linkbuilding. if you think creatively and smart then you can provide content for some quality blogs.

Backlinks, also known as inbound links and inward links. These are incoming links to a website or web page.
You got the backlinks for your website by doing Article posting, forum posting, blog posting and so on.

2. If on a relevant website but not in a relevant perspective ie huge weblink area it's not going to be of much or any value.

3. If on a website of excellent status placed with magazine in perspective it may be of advantage. That advantage is determined by unique too many to go into here and some neither I or anyone else outside look for know about.

You can do this with the help of other websites. Backlinks are the references of your website placed on other different sites. If the websites place the references of your website that is called backlinks to your site. But, it is important to remember that it is better to place your website address on the websites that have related niche. That gives you more chances to get more backlinks.
