Just a thought really. The web started with word/pictures and is moving towards video more and more but does audio content still have a place? Has anyone used it successfully, i..e putting content on a site which can be clicked and listened to rather than someone having to read a document?

Yes it does help improve conversion, however visual and sound stimulus used together grab the users attention much more so you tend to get a better return on investment overall by using the two together. Even if the image is screen capture it is still more likely to engage the user than audio alone.

Soundcloud and spotify are highly successful. Although, be wary, Pandora have had ups and downs. With the of Pandora CEO also "stepping down", I'm not sure there is much of a return to be made on audio right now.

In reply to serendipity, I think the effort is to use sound files as a commodity, and then charge advertisers or subscribers, rather than generating sales.

Generating sales via a sound file wouldn't really work anyway, just picture yourself staring at a 2d picture of a product for 3 minutes while someone talks about it from an audio file.

My internet marketing chap does HTML5 where audio doesn't need to preload through 3rd party software and he reckons it will become massive over the next few years.

Yes we tend to find that people going to work on trains listen to podcasts in this way, etc. I listen to podcasts in the office whilst working on other tasks.

At one of my old firms we put a lot of audio on the website both as podcasts users could download and guides to stuff.

The biggest issue with business use of websites is that a lot of people use a desktop PC with no speakers, so audio is no good to them. Even those with laptops tend to have the sound turned off as when in the office the playing of audio in open plan places is frowned upon.
