approached to sell a domain...

Hi All

I own quite a few domains that are lined up for future projects. I have been approached about one of these and asked if i would sell for £500, i said no would need to be a lot more and he offered £800 within about 30 mins.

Now the marketplace it is in is the kind that would generate big margins (it is linked to hosting in the cloud), does anyone have any advice? I am usually decisive but do i push for more and sell, do i list it on SEDO and send him the link or do i sit on the domain until i can dedicate time to it....

I am not sure at the moment and thought some of you may have domain selling advice!

Consider that the buyer is most likely making a low offer in the hopes you don't know it's value. If he's gone from 500 to 800 I'd say there was more to be made. Personally I'd look at making a counter offer in the mid £xxxx range. If you want an opinion on it pm me the domain.

You can put it on sedo and if you get a bid on it you can then launch an auction from that bid. You will be charged 15% commission selling through sedo though. pm if you would like my opinion on value.

Sounds like the jump from 500 to 800 was really easy to this guy so I would do the same and ask for at least double that.. If you think its for business purposes its still not a high price.

I've had this.

They are brokers who want to buy from you to then sell on to the brand owner.

The offers went from £500 to £7500. I didn't sell in the end - I've got too many things connected to the email address.

I sold one to a housing developer for four figures and a Ltd and associated domain to an investment house for five figures some time back.

I think it depends on what you planned to do with it - you bought it for future projects - can you get something similar?? Did you intend to keep it or sell if the offer was right?

As said in the other posts, if they went from 500 to 800 in 30 min then you will more than likely be able to get alot more - I would personally get back to them with what you want ( probably high end) and then negotiate from there - if they say yes to your high end offer then that's fair enough if not then what have you lost?

Something like that though would always make me think ' what if' - it could be the next big thing and I would have sold the domain for £xxxx and it could be integral to their business that they need that name andf therefore would have paid more

It is a keyword rich domain and i would say there are plenty of variants they could choose, my guess is they are keen to snap up a range of variants of that domain and mine is in the way as it is a .com.

I could do something with it and probably get some decent recurring revenue but i dont actually see it as something that would make me huge amounts in say 5 years time as i feel the relevance of the search term will fade....

Anyway we are up to an offer of £1250 and i will probably take the next offer as i can then spend a little more on some other projects!

I wouldn't label people without evidence, I've bought domains in the past upto £8000 and I don't trade in them. do some research on the person if you can but at the end of the day if £800 is tempting why are you worrying about if they will pass it on for profit.

I say if you have to think about it take the money. I've done that loads of times, even sold twitter names I've owned

its tricky, but you have to weigh up the attachment you have with that domain and think to yourself, would you prefer the money? If you don't end up using the domain then you have just missed out on an easy £800

the value is proportionate to the person buying it, a bit like a personalised registration plate for a car.

sounds like you were happy with the price, so good times all round i guess?!

Don't bother with any of the websites which automatically value your domain. They don't work. They will tell you qwertyuiop.net is worth thousands!

There are various factors to consider when valuing a domain and things have change recently. Exact match domains aren't worth what they used to be for instance.
You have keyword domains
brandable domains
short acronym names
etc.
If you have a domain you aren't using you can put it on a parking company marketplace such as sedo or namedrive and guage worth by the amount of offers you receive.
I can give an opinion if you would like to pm but it's purely my personal opinion and no guarantee! I have bought and sold lots of domains and developed sites and am a nominet member so know a little I have lots of expert contacts too so can point you to other sources to check.
