AOL Email Problem Again

Does anyone know why this would happen ... the RSPCA contacted me about my complaint about the RSPCA clinic up here. I responded, sending my mobile number to her. As I didn't get a response I contacted them again by email today ... it was returned!

I have only sent 2 emails today and don't understand this, which came with an attachment which I haven't opened :| ... sorry guys for being a pain :redface: x

Friends don't let friends use AOL email accounts. Get a Gmail.

For as far as i can remember AOL email address have been a complete nightmare. They tend to select genuine emails and class them as spam, prevent emails getting through and a general pain in the butt

Go for a Free Gmail account, or better still if you own a domain, get one for that, its easy to do and free if you own the domain and have hosting.

I do have a self hosted one but I have all sorts linked to this bluddy addy as I've had it for years and years ... it's been working fine for weeks now and it's just done this again ... bring back bluddy typewriters, tipex and telephones that are mostly black ... just ring ... and you just pick them up and say hello x

PS ... I will try replying to the RSPCA using another addy !x

Do you have other machines sharing your internet connection? From the error message you're getting, it looks like other computers on your connection (or possibly yours) are sending out large quantities of email - this could be deliberate, or you could unwittingly have a 'zombie' machine on your network which is being used for spamming.

Check your machine (and any others you have) is fully up to date with its virus software, and check that - if you have wireless - it is secured with a password (ie not open to the general public).

As other posters have said, it may just be an AOL error, but with a return message like that, I would rather be on the safe side and check there's nothing a bit more sinister going on.

Ah in that case the address that is listed in the error message may well be what's called a proxy server, which is what all the 3 dongle users in your area are connecting through, so to AOL it looks like these mails are coming all from the same computer, when in reality, they are not.

So don't worry about the scary zombies, it sounds like you are safe - especially if your antivirus is up to date

Set them up as IMAP - not POP

Access them all at the same time using Thunderbird

And you will never look back

(You can also bring your AOL email into Thunderbird but still aim to move away from it in the long run - IMHO)

Well you would benefit from some IT outside help then would be my comment

Having things like a basic email set up right for going forwards matters a lot for a business even if very small

I would suggest you find someone on this forum whose replies you like and start a relationship with them for bits of paid ad hoc support

People can do a lot by logging into your machine and sometimes a 10 minute phone call can do more for you than months of asking on forums and being out of your depth so you do not even know what to really ask in the first place

Some of the support folk on here will be pretty cost efficient as opposed to dealing with big firms with annual contracts etc

Just make sure they understand where you are at and your pretty simple requirements - they can get a bit carried away these techies!

Maybe £50 to get you set up with a far better email system with some ad hoc training enough to get you going

The thing is that I have a self hosted worpress blog which comes with email and I also have email with my Mr site website. However, when I asked a question about which was best wordpress or Mr Site, I got several conflicting stories :|

At the end of the day when you look at what's on the news, nothing is safe ...

Dont fuss about what you have but what you should have and what you are trying to acheive and then work towards that IMHO

My previous comments still stand just now even more solidly

What is best - well it all depends on what you are trying to acheive etc etc

Sort it and push on and acheive something or piddle about for days weeks months

IMO you need to get someone in for a few hours and sort you out - IT boys like Stugster on here, pay them a few hours of their time to take a look, answer questions, point you in the right direction to keep you safe.

It's happening over and over, and there's sensitive info involved, you need to step it up

I have learnt quite a lot over the last 12 months or so hacktually ... but there's always someone one step ahead of me

As soon as I get some spare money I'll take my PC to someone who can be trusted ... now let me think ... who can you trust nowadays x
