anything other than google analytics to tracking adwords effectivness?

I'm using www.piwik.org - I don't think it has as much functionality as Google Analytics, but it works well and it is open source and new features are added all the time.

for reasons that have eluded the designer of our CMS and several seo experts and PPC experts and assorted boffins and gurus over the last two years google simpy cannot be made to work on our site. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Has it anything to do with analytics code not being present on your home page?
I have a few sites in Actinic that use a dedicated outer layout for the homepage. I learnt the hard way and forgot to add the analytics code which screws up the results.

If you need to track visitors that make an offline enquiry i.e.: telephone call, you could try website call tracking. Works in a similar way to analytics and even integrates with it to capture every visitor not just web ones.

no obvious reason why it misses some and picks up others

about 8% pay by paypal but google is missing about 70% of transactions

ummm, for google analytics to register the transaction the customer needs to land on the receipt page, so either the customer is not returning back to the store, or there is coding problems on the receipt page.
Is there any chance you could put another payment up (e.g. invoice with order) quickly so I can place a dummy order and inspect the receipt page?

Take a look this thread. It may help as most of the payments by paypal don't get registered because customers don't go back to the store.

Also, this is probably a silly question but do you place orders in the new orders tab within Actinic? as these wont register in GA.
