Hi,

A friend of mine has asked me for some help in naming his clothing brand, he seems to think im quite creative with these types of situations (lol, im not!) but dont want to disapoint him

He's a young chap who is a martial artist and wants to set up his own make of fightwear, basically tee's, sweat tops, beanies etc. To be fair to the lad he's pretty far along the process having priced up garments, printing prices and is already talking to a few designers for the motif work but has yet to come up with a name for the 'brand'.

So is there anyone out there with a burst of creativity thaty could help me brainstorm a good name?? If you've got any thoughts just list them in this thread ;)

EDIT: just as an idea, global fightwear brands have names such as: Tapout, Assassin Fightwear, Silverstar, Toe 2 Toe, Blitz Fightwear, Full Contact Fighter, Bad Boy etc etc. The list goes on.

I must admit I cringe at the idea of coming up with your brand name through a forum - its such a commitment and can mean so much.
Please consider who the clothing will appeal to - there are many kinds of people who do martial arts, and I think what you wear becomes a reflection of yourself. Is it high end, mid range in price, and where will he sell the clothing?
There are a ton of other things I would go through with a Client before brainstorming a brand name.
That's not to say that great ideas can come from spontaneous discussions, but I'd urge a fair amount of thought - on whether the name will do the job of selling the clothes to the right people in the right places.
Good luck.

BlackBelt

HighKick
Martial Arts Clothing that Kicks Ass

Meanwhile try words and phrases related to martial arts as they are the terms people might be Googling

Tips here for great names and their search value

(add words martial arts clothing into search box)

Fatal Fashion...like it ;-)

Crooked Jaw is pretty spot on for the market I expect.

Mushin No Shin has a good back story...but hate to admit it, the ones above are probably better suited to the target market.

Thanks for the help guys, come great ones in there.

Loved Fatal Fightwear but just googled it and found this: http://www.fatalfightgear.com ............... boo :-(

Keep em' coming though

My daughter normally charges for this and you will see why she earns her fee because you have all overlooked the name of where this kit is used. This then is a freebie that she knocked up quickly.

She also checked the domain name and the .co.uk is available. I would get in quick however mattey I can't see it being around for long we got a lot of sharp eyes in this forum.

Here then is your freebie from Jade. I will expect a t shirt if you decide to use it. The trading name and brand
dojo warrior

For those not into martial arts the dojo is the club where you train. It is the spiritual home of all martial arts.

The letters F and Z in a name suggest a youth-oriented product. Also, there is a trend towards initials and abbreviations in names of products geared at the youth market, as young people are used to truncated forms when they text, use Facebook etc. I would normally tell clients to steer clear of initials, as no-one knows what they stand for but perhaps a conventional texting or chatroom sequence of letters would do for your friend's product line eg UDM (u da man), 2M2H (Too much to handle) - if the target audience knows what it stands for, of course.

Try the online Urban Dictionary for ideas for youth-culture words. For ideas on how to go about choosing a name see http://www.winningnames.co.uk/businessname.php

It not essentially a 'youth' market Susan, the martial arts & MMA market is pretty wide spread across ages and culture and tends to appeal to people participating in the sprt or lovers of the sport. As you can appreciate participants in the sport will be very dedicated to what they do, very focused and want to represent the sport in the clothing they wear. As will the fans.

I think the main thing here is not to associate a martial arts & MMA brand with that of a youth culture brand too much, and i dont want to use the words chav clothing here lol!!, but you get my drift.

I think this is why my collegue has had issues in naming the brand as the name has to have a strong link/association with the sport as opposed to youth orientated slang word. Hope that makes sense??

If the name is meant to be clearly visible on the garments, then best to have something reasonably short (like Dojo, previously mentioned) and one that cannot be misinterpreted. C,O and Q are letters that are often confused from a distance, for instance (Rock might be read Rook, eg). K is such a popular letter for brand names for this reason - can only be pronounced one way (unless silent as in knife) and can't be confused with another letter. Anything with Kick in is a good idea - suits the sport, and will look good when written.

I suggest your friend skims through relevant books, articles, websites etc to brainstorm words. Think laterally and look at any material that could conceivably be related to fighting eg Roman gladiators, mythological gods of war etc.

Here are a couple of suggestions from my quick look at the subject (but NB I don't know anything about martial arts): XIPHOS, Iron Palm, something beginning QI..., Gladius.
