Google is constantly updating the algo.

Your ranking could be a result of changes to content, link building, competition or just that Google no longer likes your site.

Google provides a free service, their T&C make it quite clear that they are under no obligation to index or rank any website. Relying on Google for your business isn't a good long term marketing strategy.

Google announced a page speed update last month; increasing the weight of load times on mobile in search rankings. This year we’ll probably see the release of the mobile first algorithm update. So it’s vital you begin focusing on mobile load speeds and possibly implementing AMP for primary pages (at least).

I wouldn’t bother with AMP. Unless you are a news site it doesn’t provide any benefit.

    Fisicx I have to disagree.
AMP is specifically designed to improve usability and load times on mobile devices- by developing a mobile version of a site (sounds like 2012 again!) according to these stipulations not only will it massively improve load times, it could even get cached on Google’s servers and be served to users instantly (apparently).

Why do you think it only applies to new sites?
Why would The Guardian have gone ahead with AMP if it served no purpose for them?

Surely Google would be rendering the initiative almost completely useless if this were the case.

Check your website as a customer, you won't need to check google algorithm update mostly not always. I don't know when i have checked last google update still day by day my website growing well. UX/UI is the most important thing to consider. Keep it best and then check result after some time.

I agree with @fisicx in that for most businesses it's completely pointless. We are working with clients to speed up their websites as much as possible but AMP is not a cost-effective solution for most clients. In fact, I wouldn't encourage any clients, big or small, to invest time in AMP.

AMP pages are all cached and served from Google's own servers and they are very fast....BUT...you only see the AMP pages when going from Google search results on a mobile. AMP is not for desktop search or when you go direct to that website/page. Also, after being served an AMP page, when you click a link in the page it will take you to a normal page. Therefore, the fast loading AMP page has limited usage.

It's also another area of the site that needs maintaining, AMP technology is still developing and not all functionality is available with AMP. It can hinder conversions.

We have tested it with our own websites and concluded that it's not practical or helpful for normal businesses.

For those reasons I wouldn't encourage any clients to adopt it. They should just focus on continuously improving site speed.

The newspapers that have adopted AMP have discovered a fall in visitor numbers. AMP is primarily for news propogation on mobiles. You see the summaries when you search, you click, read and move on or you click read and click again to visit the source website.

If that’s what you want for your business crack on. I’d prefer people to go directly from search to my website.

Newspapers actually reported increases in traffic, but decreases in engagement.

I agree that for ecommerce sites, AMP isn't really a viable option for most people. However, I believe that the fundamental basis it is designed upon is sound. The idea that coding practices are structured in a way that improves load times for mobile is a sensible direction, albeit an additional expense.

    I still stand by this:

So it’s vital you begin focusing on mobile load speeds

AMP pages are all cached and served from Google's own servers and they are very fast....BUT...you only see the AMP pages when going from Google search results on a mobile. AMP is not for desktop search or when you go direct to that website/page.
That's why it's called accelerated mobile pages :)

The fact is that the number of people searching on mobile devices is overtaking desktop (and in some industries surpassed by some margin, a long time ago). With the mobile first algorithm, Google is encouraging website owners to build for mobile and optimise for desktop, rather than vice versa.

If I were a [random trade] in [random UK city/region], and I operated a simple website to advertise my services, I would be looking at AMP.

But I agree that for many the expense, effort, and potential benefits aren't worth it just yet.

Well, Nice question but Google never tells any of its update but 2 major updates has already happened. Latest one is ongoing many of the websites have lose their position and Google has clearly mentioned there is no way to fix those websites which has lose their place. One major update would happen in June and July regarding mobile responsive. Those websites which will not working good in Mobile phones going to badly hurt their SEO position.

Starting in July 2018, Google will finally use mobile page speed as a ranking in their mobile search results.
You're a bit behind the times on this. This was announced 3 months ago.

As far as I know about Google algorithm, no one can tell you whether it has changed. As far as the changing of the algorithm is concerned, Google keeps on changing it feels so. If Google come out and say we have changed the algorithm, then everybody will alter its website according to the changes.

In my opinion, the algo is just for SPAM!!
Wrong. Without it there would be no Google.
just keep updating your website, create high quality content, get high quality social traffic and get high quality backlinks for authentic websites .
Not necessary, agreed, irrelevant, not necessary
