I'm afraid that I have to say that having unneccesarily made the situation public the two co conspirators should justify their comments or lose their credibility in this forum.

This does not mean that when someone has had justifiable bad service or problems that suppliers refuse to resolve, that it cannot be brought to the attention of the other forum members

I think that we could argue that Mac has done the 'bad service' and now refuses to resolve it. Therefore it should be left to the forum members to sort it out.

Far from being unrelated to business, this is a perfect example of how 'negative marketing' can sometimes be a temptation in business but can have devastating consequences in the long term.

It should be put up as a sticky, not locked out.

I agree with that, as it stands 3 people in the other thread now stand a good chance of not being trusted by anyine that has read that thread. As I see it at least one of them is honest, but not knowing which one by not allowing the thread to conclude does none of them any favours at all.

Some people in here are kids (literally) and the locked out thread is something that they should learn from.

Business lesson No.1 - Don't put down another company's work as it can all blow up in your face big-time!

This sort of thing is much more relevant to business than a great deal of stuff on here.

But has it had gone public, it should have been left. If it had been my businesses reputation on the line, i'd have wanted my say.

Oh my, who kicked that damn hornets nest!

Sometimes the problem with letting things run their course is that it can sometimes get out of hand, and even liable. Knowing when the right moment to step in and "moderate" is not an exact science and we may not necessarily always get it right - but it is sometimes better to moderate too early than too late.

Alpha made the decision to step in and stop the thread before it had the possability of getting nasty. Some of you think he was wrong to do this, and others of you couldn't care less because you had got bored of that thread.

There is no right or wrong from what I can see here, just personal opinion as to what each individual would like to have seen happen. You regulars here know that I dont like big next atmospheres and grumpy ol' folk - I like it to be all rosey and happy in the garden

I agree that if the post was a crafty self promotion excercise then it has backfired, and there is something to be learnt from that. However, and it is a big however, it may not have been and for all we know Mac and Nic may have decided that after all the bad feeling that was gearing up towards them they may have decided to "sod the lot of you" and gone to another forum rather than get into an argument...even if they were (or were not) right. The fact is we do not know for sure and it was all speculation not based on any real facts. From what I can see the thread did seem to be getting out of hand and almost into a witch hunt.

Back to this particular thread and the issue of "locking". The moderators may, in some of your opinions, get it wrong. Some agree the thread was due a "delete" or "lock" and as such think the moderator in question was right. We're all human and make decisions based on what we believe is right at the time. I feel that we should have seen that thread sooner and nipped it in the bud much sooner, but we all have paying jobs to do and sometimes one slips through the net When things get nasty no-one wins and conversations/threads like that one actually end up pointless and lose the lesson that maybe could have been learnt from it.

Any chance we can move on please folks?
If Mac and Nic return then feel free to PM them privately for more info or whatever. We all have our own personal thoughts as to who is right and wrong, by continuing to discuss it will only lead to more speculation and derogratory comments which isn't the atmosphere I want here, and I'm sure none of you want either - its is nearly Christmas after all

there is the other option of pruning the thread (already done) and then posting asking for people to keep the thread on topic and not to speculate.

In this instance it made for very interesting reading, mainly because we all have to deal with various issues in business and all deal with them in different ways, seeing threads like this can teach us how to deal with these issues more effectively.

"Moderating" doesn't involve only deleting and locking, in involves mediating and keeping threads (especially the controversial ones) on topic and under control.

None of us want flame wars on the forums, but to prevent that is what the mods are here for isn't it ??

Yes that is one option I agree, but on this occasion that route wasn't taken. If people weren't speculating then what else could have been said in that thread (not an invitation to carry on here ). All that was posted on that thread was speculation only which is what kept it going.

The speculation was based around Mac and Nic conspiring to promote Mac's services, which is potentionally damaging to Mac's business and based on no hard facts. Unfortunately that speculation is the part that is educational IF true.

Frankly, I disagree with your conclusion, Ozzy. There are winners here. You and your fellow moderators have consistently demonstrated restraint, integrity, and fair play while moderating these forums. When faced with an awkward situation like this, you act according to your principles. You have my respect. Over time, you'll be shown to be real winners.

I followed the thread in detail and to be honest - as soon as people started to speculate then it became a train crash waiting to happen... 2 of the people involved didn't help matters by keeping quiet... But the amount of guessing that went on was really funny :lol:

It's non of my business BUT :roll:

Nobody knows who started what between nic & mac (who contacted who first etc) but amongst all the shouts of "rip off" and "dodgy designer" people have to remember that what is written in text (either on the net or on paper is potentially liableous (sp?)) - Respect must be given to the designer for taking the time to register and defend his work, he could have quite easily insisted that UKBF remove the thread to avoid legal action.

These things blow up on forums all over the net from time to time (or every day if you visit webhostingtalk :wink: )

Mods made the right call as far as i am concerned, it was turning into a rumourous witch hunt... OMG! I said the "W" word :twisted:

My personal opinion is that there was still some explaining to be done by Nic and Mac. After all, they brought the subject to the forum in the first place.

In the absence of any other info, I think the designer has come out of this looking the most professional and maybe this is why he didn't take it any further.

I understand why the thread was locked; it must be very difficult to decide when to step in and we're never all going to agree on it!

One positive thing we have all learnt from this entertaining little episode is to think before posting!!

That doesn't prove anything, infact it makes the whole thing a lot more tedious and ludicrious than before...

This whole sorry episode was triggered by the ownership of a Domain Name and a SEO unfriendly script :roll:

If this is the case then whoever it was that first used the words "ripped off" should be more careful in what they post, "ripped off" implies payment for goods / services that were never recieved (or were sub standard).

If the designer never promised to register the domain in the clients name and the news script was approved on completion then we have a defemation of character issue here... It should have NEVER been brought onto public forums and should have been handled between client and designer.

The members, not the original post, blew the entire thing out of proportion. You criticised me for the advice I gave, which was 100% correct and impartial.

Say what you will, it's 100% opinion and based only on your assumptions. If you told me something, I posted the truth and everyone else assumed it to be far worse, the situation would be exactly the same.

Also, again, you asssume that the designer never promised those things.

IF you re-read my post I NEVER blamed you for anything... I put the blame on whoever posted "ripped off".
You gave advice via PM which is great, but the whole thing should never have been brought onto the public forums..

PLUS I am not making assumptions, I am saying what I see - A silly dis-agreement between designer and client that is no business to anyone else on UKBF.
You cannot blame the members for wanting to know what went on - it's normal curiosity...
