I have worked for two years on an affiliate network. The easiest way to approach affiliates is through the network which will provide the affiliate platform as well as advice and assistance.

I would recommend:
webgains.com
affiliatewindow.com
paidonresults.com
tradedoubler.com

before you sign up with any network look if they have relevant merchants, as is it will be easier to find the relevant affiliates.
Check their fees and services (vary significantly)
