we are interested in getting a .ru domain registered for our local partner. trouble is that the domain has been registered and is redirected to www.playsite.ru

presumably these guys have registered lots of .com domains with a .ru ending with the intention of selling them back to whoever wants to register a russian domain. before I knock on the front door to purchase the domain back from them - I figured I would ask here to see if anyone else has dealt with a situation like this and what I can expect.

Contacting the domain owner directly should always be the last port of call.

I'd recommend doing a whois lookup on the domain here:

nic.ru/whois/en/

Take note of when it was registered and when it is due to expire. If it's a relatively new registration (ie, registered within the past year) and it's not explicitly being used for a site, there's a slim chance that it may expire without being renewed. I've caught a number of domains this way.

A good resource for help and advice in the domain name market is "acorn domains" (google it, I don't think I have enough posts to put links up). I've used their forum a fair bit in the past for these kind of situations.

Regards,

Al
