ad space on vans

while driving around today i noticed there were lots of big white vans free of advertising which might be quite valuable to businesses wishing advertise in the area the vehicle travels and the white van man makes a bit of money for displaying the ad, bus advertising is quite expensive at about £100 + a week and this could be a cheaper effective alternative, what do ya think?

Its been put in play in afew high populated areas, such big cities like new york, LA ect. It would be good to try if the advertisement & route targets/revolves around a specific target audience. "dont want to sell life-insurance primarily to 18yr old freshmen college students, better off marketing another generation lol".

Try it & let us know!
Good idea if done properly~

you could target it e.g a self employed electrician who was in and out of building sites/merchants could advertise a construction business/product. i was thinking about a similar site to whitevan ads where the van man gives details of his driving locations and is tailored to the advertiser, also perhaps in the example above dewalt could put an ad on the van and instead of money he could get a drill, possibly more attractive to van man (higher value) and cheaper to dewalt?

yes, it might be difficult to generate a large database of vans.

what do you think would be a reasonable cash reward for van man per month

I did see some companies which find advertisers and then car wrap the ad onto the van,

So you offer a service where advertisers will be able to pay you for a car wrap - including the price of the wrap, then you pay the van driver his Insurance and Road Tax for the year (He buys first and sends you proof)

You should do well if you can get the white van man to go for it ;)

Think how many people would love to have their Road tax and Insurance paid for the year :D

or a packet of free maltesers everyday for a year

i think a lot of people would be willing depending on the incentive, afterall it is just the work van not their new audi a3, thinking about it, they should be avertising thier own services

I actually did a business plan on this type of business about 3 years ago (for a competition). To wrap a van like on the picture above, it would cost around 700-800 pounds I think. To put and ad on the side is about 350, if I remember correctly. Might be wrong.

I personally think this is a great idea. In fact, we were talking about this very idea a little while ago. Had no idea that there are a couple of companies already doing this.

Go and do it! :)

We have a fleet of vans, all white, new ... there you go, your first customer!

Kind regards.

Barbara

thanks for the offer barbara, your vans would be ideal constantly traveling around, what would you accept for example a 12 month campaign with 5 of your vans with ads on the back doors (if you don't have windows) hypothetically speaking.

an equivilant sign on the back of a bus would cost about 200 a month but the routes are guaranteed and it;ll be on the road more than a van, so came up with £400 p.a for the van driver and £40-£50 a month for advertiser + vinyl cost

it would all depend on how valuable the vans are to advertisers, mileage, routes, area, target market. You could have different levels bronze, gold , plat and charge diff fees

Hi Willi22,

I think the idea is great providing you can find the advertisers which would be the main obstacle as I see it. I would also consider targeting the self employed building industry as any money would come in useful as times are hard at present.

Good luck

6% of white van drivers are builders, 6% couriers, the rest are a various mix. interestingly 35% are women? a bit surprised at that.

seriously considering setting up a website so interested vehicle owners could sign up, when the database is big enough you would have a good variety of vehicle routes to attract the advertisers and in the meantime workout the contract, packages and prices and any other probs.

any ideas on how to market the idea to vehicle owners?

the message is easy- we'll pay your tax and insurance for displaying an ad on your van

I suppose the obvious answer is to advertise your message on perhaps 50% of the vehicle owner's vans you get in the first year (get them by contacting companies with fleets). You should at least break even, if not, look at it as your initial investment. Once the ball is rolling reduce the percentage.

Perhaps you could have a policy of always having, say, one in ten of the van ads advertising your own advertising service. or maybe just put your message somewhere on every ad you ever organise.

I have to admit to not knowing, or even having an idea, as to the cost. :| I guess it would be dependent upon what you have already mentioned and each company would be different.

Good luck with this, I hope you do get something off the ground and let us all know your progress.

Kind regards.

Hi All

Just this second registered on the forum as I'd noticed a link to one of our gallery pictures, The Maltesers van, in our web stats.

I'll have a look around in a moment to see if there is a specific forum to say hello and introduce myself in.

For reference the van shown was a white van fully wrapped in digital print, rather than a red van with just the Malteser and text prints added. Smaller vans like this usually have the roof wrapped, taller panel vans just tend to be the sides (of course you can't see the roof).

For your general reference a 1-off full wrap including the roof on a small compact van is typically £1100-£1400+VAT per van, a SWB Transit would be around £1500+ and say a LWB/Hi-Roof £2000+. Fleet quantities could get a chunky discount on these. For a 'part wrap' of just the back doors you are looking at £300-£450 depending on the van size. Prices would be plus any design work on top. These are general market prices.

Van wraps must be done in a fairly well controlled clean environment (not outside) so to give national coverage you'd need to have a sign company in each regional area? Also another consideration is that the host vehicle needs to have good original paintwork - wraps and re-sprays / rust don't mix well.

Another observation is that at the end of the advert period the wrap needs to come off. This is easily done and leaves the paintwork in original condition but for example that Maltesers one would take 3-5 hours to 100% strip and clean.

Hope this info helps you

Cheers
Dave
