Accountant Wanted

Chloe's fund is just about ready to go
We have a core of kind members on here who have agreed to become trustees of the fund

We are now in need of an accountant who would be willing to take on the financial side of things and also become a trustee member

Pete I don't know if this helps but I know an accountant in Lincs very reasonable at about £350-£500 quid. You could possibly half that with a contra deal for some printing. Let me know if of interest and I'll dig the contact details out.

Who is Cloe by the way ? It might help if you say wht the charirty is about.

The OP is looking for an accountant to provide their services free for the charity he runs. Don't know if you realised that.

I'll be the prophet of doom. What you are finding here is not unusual as many accountants (most in fact) lack the knowledge & experience to be able to prepare accounts for charities. It requires a fair amount of specialised learning & CPD which is unlikely for them to be cost effective to undertake.

You also have the problem of independence should your account's require examination (I am not au fait with the rules in England & Wales currently but you will get them from the Charity Commision Website)

Furthermore, the entire charity sector is having problems with finding trustees. It can sometimes be a question of liability but more often than not, it is that people cannot be arsed with the responsibility.

I wish I could offer more encouragement. I am a voluntary treasurer for a couple of organisations too but in all honesty the hassle of it gets me down (Management by committee is the worst command structure devised by man).

Zeno is correct, being an accountant of a Charity takes a lot of very specific knowledge (please see my blog post about the qualification DChA)

This level of expertise and commitment does mean that finding a professional who is willing to give up quality chargeable time freely is going to be very difficult.

My advice to you is to look among your supporters, take the same approach you would a philanthropist and engage. If an accountant is passionate about your charitable objectives they will support you with time, committment and invaluable advice. If they (like I do at this current point in time) see you as 'another client' you can expect a fee.

I think it is very unlikely you will find an accountant who will offer their services for free.

I know of an accountants firm who specialise in charity accounts, they do charge but think the rates are a lot lower because it is charity sector they specialise in.

If the charity cannot afford to hire an accountant would be quite risky but students who are near to finishing their accountancy degrees, ACCA, CIMA exams etc might volunteer to do for free to gain experience but as I said quite risky because they not experienced. Maybe could get an accountancy student to prepare your accounts and then find an experienced accountant who is happy just to check the accounts over and agree a fee with accountant for checking it and agree a another fee if there are corrections to be made. This might keep the cost down.
