Anyone actually get anything out of LinkedIn - or is it now just an AI cesspit?

OK this might be part question/part rant 😂

I have used LinkedIn for years. Always kept it strictly professional - career changes, sharing company info & news, keeping up with ex-colleagues career moves etc. I wouldn't say I've ever thought it's massively useful but it's been worth browsing through once or twice a day, whilst having a laugh at the fake stories (you know the ones... "I was on my way to a job interview and a guy I thought was homeless couldn't pay for his coffee. I paid for it, then when I arrived for the job interview that guy was actually interviewing me and it turns out he just hadn't brushed his hair that day and had left his platinum Amex at home... he gave me the job... the moral of the story is you never know who you're speaking to" type absolute nonsense).

But recently.... good God. Maybe it's just my bullshit tolerance levels draining as I get older, but it's just an unreadable cesspit of pointless information, unnecessary self- back-slapping, and AI generated absolute drivel. Not just the AI stories that are obviously false, but the fact that almost every post by a business is AI-created too... leading to the same phrases that say lots without saying anything, time after time.

I've just returned from our industrys biggest international trade show - the last 2-3 days on LinkedIn have just been the same post from 50 or 60 or 70 different companies who have all, apparently, been doing the exact same thing:

    - Having a great time - what a whirlwind!
    - Strengthening relationships
    - Meaningful discussions
    - Connecting with new partners and re-connecting with long established ones.
    - Discussing the future of the industry
    - Sharing ideas and opportunities

Etc etc etc - And I should add, our company have posted the exact same sentiments! What's particularly laughable is that everyone at the event was moaning to each other about the lack of footfall, how it goes on too long, unsure about the future of trade fairs.... but no, we can't let that be shown or discussed on LinkedIn!

It made me wonder - what do I actually get from LinkedIn? Personally, or our business. And the answer, at least in quantifiable terms, is pretty much zero. In terms of leads, in the 3 1/2 years I've been here we had one lead come through about 2 years ago which has *just* recently turned into a small order. We've had other oddball/random enquiries but nothing serious.

I suppose that much like other advertising there might be things we can't quantify - has it helped with our brand recognition? Have people lower down the chain seen our products and then bought them from a local supplier or distributor?

There's occasionally keeping on top of what competitors are doing I suppose - but I don't think it's ever really stuff that, if relevant, I wouldn't hear about through the grapevine anyway.

So - am I doing something wrong, or has it really just become the pointless treadmill of "aren't we doing great" and "look at me" type posts that I think it is? Does anyone really see LinkedIn as a meaningful, useful tool for their business?

I'm on a bit of a mission to cull some of my socials and certainly my daily scrolling time - as it stands, LinkedIn is up there as one to be deleted!

It certainly has more than its fair share of dross & drivel. Even down to distinct waves of self-indulgence and fabrication - some favourites being

    - bought tea for a beggar in return for a selfie

    - I'm so successful I bought my mum/brother/ beggar a new car (I check - the pictured car is always on finance).

    - I took a chance employing someone with no experience.

    - oddly, last year was a stream of self-righteous essays about giving up alcohol

Sometimes I encourage my feed to keep them, just for entertainment. Mostly I get rid of obvious dross to keep a mix of humour, industry knowledge and customer relevance - and yes, that definitely does require some work.

In short, Id say it isnt great for picking up end-user customers (probably depends on your product /customer), but is useful for staying in front of your connections.

I reckon LinkedIn still holds some value when it comes to staying in front of your connections.

However, I wouldn’t count on it for direct leads, particularly since so much of the content now feels like the same old recycled business jargon. It can still be handy for keeping tabs on your industry and understanding what people are genuinely discussing, but you’ll need to sift through a lot of noise to find the useful bits.

Picked up clients, business partners, ideas, bought out a very small business, hired staff, found out about gov funding that paid 1/2 wages for 5 staff for 12 months.

    So pretty good.

Also loads of pointless crap, same as everyone else.

    How to improve it.

    Delete contacts ruthlessly.

Don't comment on posts that you dont want to see a lot more of. One comment on racism complete messed up my feed for 3 days.

Don't stop and read the "I saved a beggar and he gave me 100 Bitcoins posts" - even reading them makes more appear in your feed.

Post honestly - if an exhibition was boring, be the one person that says so.

I get recruiters contacting me frequently even though I am no longer open to work. Some useful gossip about former colleagues but a lot of crap too.

I quite enjoy the virtue-signalling B/S - and particularly the spoofs that follow it.

And I chuckle a lot when competitors bang on about how busy they are. Nothing screams 'a bit slow' quite like 'look how busy I am'.

I am thrilled and humbled to announce that I am pivoting my career to address this high-impact, disruptive query.
Let’s double-click on your assessment. You aren't wrong. If you scroll through your feed right now, it is a masterclass in leveraging synergistic AI-generated thought-leadership. In layman's terms: it is a cesspit of robots writing essays for other robots, while humans sit in the corner eating corporate-subsidized lunches.
However, if you lean into the discomfort and optimize your personal brand, you can still extract major ROI from the platform.
    ;)

The puzzles are fun. I do those daily. Other than that, it's quite entertaining to see someone promote something and then see that the only people that "like" it are their colleagues.

Perhaps by design, but the only part of LinkedIn that has ever worked for me is the premium membership that lets me direct message people bypassing their privacy and communication preferences. It allows me to message top dogs at the dogs bollocks with a very direct to the point sales pitch "I do this, can I pitch it to you, hang up on me if I haven't sold it to you in under 10 minutes"

I do literally ask the person for 10 minutes, and I tell them to cut the call off if by 10 minutes they see now value in what I can offer. My message is usually no more than 4 sentences in the DM. That approach has served me well for the past 10+ years.

As for scrolling the feed on LinkedIn, I don't. The shop front of LinkedIn died a long time ago and became a waste of time.
