Seeking stationery manufacturer to print, bind/form notebooks and calendars. Looking for mid and high quality product level and a manufacturer who can be alongside us as we grow into high volumes.

Niche, family-owned, small manufacturers welcomed as much as bigger firms.

I know a print management firm if that would help?

Hi Lucky,

Sent you a private message, didn't think it appropriate to share his company details in an open thread without his permission.

I've manufactured notebooks and done a variety of paper/card based products including calendars.

What you don't want is a small family business who sub-contract out the bits they cannot handle and charge you for the priviledge.

What you need to do is research the printers who have the machinery which can do your work economically. Bigger printers with bigger presses are cheaper than printers with small presses.

When I first started I researched 32 printers before settling on the one I used for a number of years. They were one of the biggest colour printers in the country. I then moved to printing in Spain and Italy.

Good luck with the calendars. 2 of my biggest bonfires were unsold calendars!

bigger presses take a lot more looking and setup and a bigger printer will have bigger overheads.
In my experience bigger printers are much more amenable on price because of their overheads. They are desperate to keep those presses rolling.

Great. Would you mind if I PM you?

They will on a decent run but we don't know quanties we are talking about here. Also of they are looking at high quality then a printer than churns out print may not be the best fit. Not always about the cost either. How easy a company is to deal with and the quality of the end product need to be taken into account .Then does the company do the binding in house or do they have to outsource it all .What additional options can they supply. Any special finishes etc.

I agree with your points. I have found that its the smaller printers who are less up front about the outsourcing. For a particular type of wiro calendar binding there is only one contractor in the UK. Delivery times can become stretched.

Thanks, but need a firm who can supply tailored products - many of those recommended supply standard stationery-cupboard type products. This is proving incredibly difficult. I think of all the shelves of notebooks in supermarkets and bookshops and wish I knew where they're all made.

Yes, have considered China. The quality of the products we have seen isn't up to scratch. I realise however that many good notebooks are made in China though, so I don't disregard that completely. Would prefer the Made in Britain aspect though.

Understand.

Perhaps follow Apple's (and many other brands) thinking . . . . .Designed in Britain . . . . .Made In China . . . . . .That might work.

China will always be dependent on quantities, but I'm sure you can find the right factory to work with regarding quality.

Ha, that Britain/China approach is exactly one which we thought of! But how to find the quality?

In short, source, shortlist and sample from 3 to 6 factories.

The long version . . . . .

1. Contact as many stationery suppliers that you feel are able to do what is required.

2. Shortlist to 10 and disclose your requirements, gauge their response, communication, understanding your exact requirements. Ask for quotes, delivery times, minimum order quantities and sample availability.

3. Shortlist to the best 3 suppliers and sample with each.

4. Select the best product, based on quality, not price.

5. Carry out due diligence on the supplier and start the order process.

Branding, packaging and packing are all important issues you need to clarify, check and confirm.

If it's your first time ordering from a China supplier, have someone 'hold your hand' to help through the hurdles of working with a China factory.

For all orders, I advise a contract, quality control and arrange your own shipping to your door.

If you haven't found a suitable supplier yet in UK, you can do worse than trying China.

Keep your options open, until you are happy with any samples you source.

If you need any further advice on sourcing or purchasing from China, feel free to ask.

Hi, Lucky 8.

We're a UK Stationery manufacturer with a factory near London. We've designed and produced our own quality fashion stationery collections and bespoke private label products for High Street customers in the UK and across the world (both large and small!) for many years. Some of the UK made notebooks you see in the supermarkets and book stores are often ours ;-) Give us a shout if you're interested - we'd be happy to help/advise.
