I have seen 796px on quite a few websites, I thought it was a standard but I'd imagine most people are at least at 1024px so I'm sure if your under that you'll be ok.

Banner ads can be useful to place on other relevant sites but the cost just depends on which sites you place them on. You may want to look into a few sites and just ask them what they charge.
