Now I really am showing my ignorance!!! I cannot remember how to change an image from a bitmap to jpeg despite trying for ages! Could someone please advise.

I also cannot scale down the image without it cutting off a big chunk of it! When I change the dimensions, it does not scale down the whole image!

Download irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/

Its free, and allows you to save the image in jpeg, as well as other formats.
(file, save as then select the type you want from the list)
It also allows image resizing (image/resize resample) from the menu, it allows you to either specify the size in pixels or as a percentage of the original (ie 50 % of the original size).

Its a great utility for the price ;)

Or you can open the image in paint (start/programs/accessories/paint) and then click file, save as, and choose JPEG from the "save as type" box :)

As above ^^^^

But, resizing images in paint tends to distort them..

If you want, you can send me the image - and i'll resize it and change the format for you :)

It depends.

If you save it as a jpg first and then make the changes it should be OK.

Changing a bmp in paint can be difficult.

I like to use "Gimp" for my graphics editing. Its probably not the easiest way to convert it but it can.
