Good post Paul that was worth much more than 2 cents!!

I agree SQL/DDL is one of my favorite languages as well and being a standard it means that all the core stuff works across the board its only the nuances that you have to rewrite it for datatypes, functions etc.

It is interesting to see the wide ranging interpretations of database though. From a computing science point of view almost anything is a database to a degree but from a top down aspect it seems that the common consenus is that a database is the sum of its IDE, API and tools as apposed to the formatted standard of stored data.

My favourite database? Has to be Oracle (despite the price). It's famed for its stability, speed, portability and extensive procedural capabilities. For the larger enterprise this still has to be the preferred option. However I must admit to becoming more enamoured with Mysql, now that it has the capability to utilise sql subqueries, and store procedures and triggers (these facilities and more, were not available on version 3.23.) Add in the fact that Mysql (when administered correctly) is very fast, and you can use it on many platforms, then Mysql has to be a top contender. I've not used MS-SQL but I think the downside with this database is you need Microsoft operating systems on which to function ie it's not portable like other databases.
