Banner ads - where to start

I'm looking to both promote our own business with banner ads, but also hopefully promote the occasional company who is very relevant to our target audience.

As I've never been involved in this side of things before, I have absolutely NO IDEA of the kind of fees / revenues involved. I don't want to go into this totally green as I just won't get the best rates in either case - has anyone any useful pointers?

Banner ads as in online ads?

If so, are you talking placing them on your site to advertise others, or purchasing ad space on other sites to advertise yours and the other company you mention?

Banner ads can be useful to place on other relevant sites but the cost just depends on which sites you place them on. You may want to look into a few sites and just ask them what they charge.

Wow, just contacted a few sites about banner ads and some are charging £450 a MONTH for placement! Ouch. I guess this is probably standard practice and as part of a large business I'd probably not think twice....as it's my own hard earned cash (on a site that isn't actually bringing in revenue yet) it's a huge consideration.

I'm fairly au fait with press advertising, do similar rules exist for online ads? I.e. the rates are set by user coverage? IF so, how do you check this?

U can Use bidadvertiser or clicksor for banner ads they pay a good amount

Don't wish to upset the applecart or anything but if you share a similar audience, why not contemplate running a page of editorial on them and vice-versa?

Obviously just my own experience but banner ads have been SO much worse ROI-wise than editorial or text links.

All worth testing anyhow.

Some forum members on here run their own websites. Some I have seen could be relevant to yours. Why not contact these members to see if they are willing to exchange weblinks/banners?

Exchanging weblinks can now detract from natural search results - Google is having a massive transformation on all adsense sites - one guy in the states yesterday had 50 sites go down on google just because of having too many banner ads.
