Free auction site

Hi this coming September my site is going to be 100% free no listing fees at all until the end of September when hopefully I will have a new look to the site with more than 100 added features so if you are an eBay user and can not make money with the high fees then try electronicenterprise(dot)co(dot)uk we have plenty of buyers but need more sellers so give it a try and tell me what you think you've got nothing to lose.

Have I got this right

The domain is 'electronic enterprise' yet the products on the link are postage bags and premierships badges, hardly electronic items

Might be worth looking at a more relevant domain name.

This is old news to me what's the name got to do with the site hundreds of businesses have a name that has got nothing to do with what they're selling for an example curries do they sell curries no they sell electrical items this name has been around for a while and people are starting to get used to it plus I have already started making a brand out of this.

Good luck, you'll need it.

Unless you market it at a niche or have a lot of backing you'll struggle to get anywhere with it. Look at Tazbar, they had a fair amount of financial backing, TV adverts on terrestrial channels (during Coronation St etc) and they still failed miserably (I was one of their admins for a while).

To run a successful general purpose auction site, you need a hell of a lot of buyers, but to get the buyers, you need a hell of a lot of sellers. It's a chicken and egg situation.

Have a look at the Pheebay forum, the place is hospice for dying auction sites.

Go niche or die.

BTW You should drop the three tabbed box at the top of your homepage, I clicked one of the links and ended up on an American get rich quick website that talks to you. When I tried to escape from it, some nasty JavaScript tried to block my exit and popped up a load of alert boxes

Totally agree with the other posters. It'll be a hard site to get going. Would also suggest changing your domain, it's too long, it's not memorable and it doesn't have anything to do with the auction site.

The internet is full of short catchy names, look at the big sites that are similar to what you're site is, ebay, amazon, paypal... Compare their domains to yours.

Hope it goes well.

I wish you luck but its going to be almost impossible to compete with eBay. People have tried and failed many many times before.

As the OP has been told on here several times before. At least this idea seems to have lasted a bit longer than the Social networking site, Intenet Cafe or Amuzement arcade.

eBay have been doing cheap/free listings for Private Sellers for a long while, and another promotion started a few days back. It's a dead format for anything other than decent antiques and collectables. So many of these types of site come and go on an almost daily basis.

Okay you all seem to be having a go at me for my domain name. I have been trying to think of a good one for my site but every time I think of one it is taken so can anybody help me think of a good domain name. I am looking at something different, unusual, funny not something like (bid, auction bid) just a nice name with maybe just six to eight letters can anybody help me on this.

If I was looking at this financial backing how would I go about getting it?.
I am thinking of ading a niche to my site two of them should be coming with the new design.

www.e-bay.uk.com is still available, yes really.

Seriously though, have a fiddle in http://www.123-reg.co.uk/domain-names/ and it gives you loads of various domains as well as the common .com .co.uk .net, etc.

Boots don't sell boots
Amazon has nothing to do with rivers
Yahoo, anyone guess what the hell that's all about. :)

I have seen so many online auctions, more than you can shake a stick at.All have very few members and virtually nothing in the listings just loads of '0'.
If you were thinking of a more niche/select auction site then you maywell find your up against long running experienced auctioneers.
interesting to know how you get on,best wishes though

Heres a thought, rather than go straight in at the deep end with loads of listings you may concider starting small offering the auction site to businesses to off load their over stock, used machinery etc and build up from there. You wont neccesserily be B2B orientated as joe blogs could just as easily want to bid/buy.A mail shot to repo companies, councils, businesses etc.you may be surprised what kinds of things are being offloaded. You may consider free listings,no seller commision or buyer commision for a short time to get the business in

Seems like there is a new auctionesque site being touted here weekly now. I am sorry but I think you are wastin your time. People have moaned about ebay for ages but most of them stick with because of the obvious advantages and those that don't move over to their own site because no businesses really like the hassle that comes with these auction sites and therefore are not about to support a small one. Why start lisitng on a small auction site that has no buyers when you could set up your own website and be in the same place without any potential fees and less hassle. Plus then you can devote all that money/ time saved into SEO etc for your own site.

Well fiddle with 1and1, they're OK. On your auction site, if we are talking specialised electronic gear then you might do something, but if it's the run of the mill stuff I can't see it working. Too much competition from the big retailers as well as eBay etc.

Think of something else to sell. What about animals?..........eBay don't do them. You would need safeguards in place to guard against them ending up in someones takeaway etc, but if you can get it right it might run, and there must be loads of catchy names available for animal sites

i would also like to own an auction website because i think there is room for many more

what tips do you have redrob? how much money do you make every month?

If I was you do not go down this route this type of business is good and there is room for it but you need to spend a lot of time and a lot of money to make it work plus you need to go the right way about it don't go down the route like some of these people do set up an auction website and because you're making no money close it down in 12 months when your hosting package has run out I have been doing this since March 2008 and I only just started to get up of the ground.

i need to sell my PSP but the website doesn't have enough people to buy it!

We all have to start somewhere because we have only got 14 registered members doesn't mean that there is no buyers think about the thousands of people that are browsing this site that have yet not signed up because they haven't found what they want just try and post it and see what happens at the end of the day it's all free.

Are you an eBay user or business user are you fed up with the high fees but still want to use an auction websites and think eBay is the best for sales maybe it is but if anyone is ever going to be as big as eBay like me then we need to work together think if everyone on this forum worked together and signed up to my site then we may have a chance at the end of the day you are publishing your items to more customers giving you a chance to sell more try it you are losing nothing it's all free there is 52,188 that is how many members I could possibly have that could be 52,188 sellers and double that 104,376 buyers the numbers add up your chances add up you are losing nothing it's all profit profits profits £££.

Ex eBay sellers are ten a penny, just look on eBid, it's full of them all with no sales. Auctions are a dead format. I haven't a clue where you're pulling these potential sellers and buyers figures from, if it's related to page hits then you're living in cloud cuckoo land. I get 50 page views a day on a site with nothing on it apart from a blank page with the domain name on it.

The future for small traders isn't on these sites of which dozens startup and close down everyday. If you really want to make an impact get your own site/s.

Last night I got fed up and pulled off all my eBay listings and closed my shop of 5 years, eBay has screwed itself up too far now. too much work and agro for little profit.

I will never understand this. Why do people try and say we can compete with the likes of ebay, They have millions of pounds, Millions of users, Millions of shops, they just have millions of everything.

You put £5000 in to development of the site they put in £5,000,000 lets be honest no one is going to compete with this unless they have MILLIONS.

If you want to setup a small auction site then do it but be realistic with what you want to do. Even if everyone from here joined you arent even close to as big as ebay.

Now i do think you need to stop thinking ebay do a bit of advertising and see what happends but sites like this are a all over the place and if you want to make millions its the wrong project.

Did anyone say we are competing with eBay NO all I am doing is providing you with a better service that is much cheaper everyone has got to start somewhere eBay started with one member one listing anyway all I wanted to say is I have now made an option where you can list vehicles and buildings these are all searchable more features and updates will be added soon.
