One for the insurance experts; tagging @Frank the Insurance guy

We have a riding school; comes with the usual kit and has insurance on said kit, including public liability in case a bale of hay falls on a customer, etc. We have a Ford Pickup that is SORN and used to transport materials across the fields, plus a Quad also SORN and used for harrowing, but yesterday we purchased a Polaris Ranger to get around and it is road legal.

Now we'd assume it would as simple as adding to our existing insurance, but as we plan to use it to nip to and from the house which includes about 1 mile on the road - nope. We also don't seem to be able to get 'car insurance' for it to do so.

The dealer says we don't need to insure it for use on the road as it is an agricultural vehicle, but this doesn't seem right because who would cough up if we hit someone while on that 1 mile of road?

horsey folk around here swear by NFU
We have left a message with them too, as they are generally the go-to if you're country folk, talk with an 'aye me lass' accent and an 'ave a tractor (yeah we do for topping the hay).

Well strangely after popping up to the daughter in laws stables this morning I saw one coming down the lane towards me, saw your post whilst eating my lunch and got this off google

"Polaris Ranger UTVs can be made road legal, particularly in the UK, where they are commonly homologated for agricultural or full road us
To be legal on public roads, a Polaris Ranger must be registered, taxed, insured, fitted with a, number plate, and equipped with a road-legal kit that includes lights, indicators, a horn, and mirrors"

plan to use it to nip to and from the house which includes about 1 mile on the road
This means you are subject to the RTA Act and therefore must have Motor Insurance.

They're talking rubbish! (There are certain Tax exemptions depending on how much road use, but Insurance is a MUST)

For a single vehicle like this, you are best talking to NFU.

Most Insurers, including some I deal with, will not provide a quote for this type of vehicle, unless they also arrange cover for the other vehicles as well.

Yeah that's the issue we are facing now. The NFU won't insure the vehicle itself and will only cover it as part of an entire riding school policy, but as we are an 'Alternative Provision' (specialist education environment and school for disabled and SEND children) they don't cover that service so we cannot use them.... and our current insurer doesn't cover vehicles like this on our existing policy for the road but they cover our vehicles for site work (tractor, quad, pickup truck all used off-road) for use on the land

Sounds like best option is to look at insurance of all 4 vehicles (Tractor, Quad, Pickup the new Polaris) on the same policy.

We use ERS for this type of thing for Golf Clubs - don't see why they couldn't do it for a stables!

Will need some info if you would like us to have a look - will message you.

Hi Ozzy, same as Frank, I'd be happy to approach our panel for all 4 vehicles to see if there's something Premierline can do to help. Hopefully between the two of us, we might be able to find something. Pop me an email if you like ([email protected])

    Regards

    Mike

Find someone else with the same vehicle and clone the numberplate. Problem solved.

Thank you Mike, we did manage to get it sorted in the end (eventually) on our existing yard policy.
