Are you a podcast watcher or listener?

Ello ello!

I've got a few quick questions to ask, so that I can gauge how many people within the community would be interested in the podcasts and webinar content that we provide... So here we go!
  1. Have you ever listened to a podcast or watched a video related to your business industry?
  2. Do you believe that podcasts or videos can be effective tools for learning and staying up-to-date on industry trends?
  3. Would you be interested in participating in or creating a podcast or video series related to your business industry?

Much prefer reading. I can scan a document in minutes and pick out the useful bits. With a podcast you have to listen to the whole thing and hope to learn something.

The one podcast I did try to listen to rambled on for ages before they even got started on the topic. And then they were wrong so I stopped.

I've tried, but not very successfully. Why watch something at someone else's determined speed of delivery when you can read the transcript in a fraction of the time? Life's too short. I've tried playing at double speed but it's still too slow.

I never understood those who put themselves through listening / watching. Yes, some listen while in the car or whatever, but when I'm in the car, I'm relaxing, I don't want to listen to work stuffl (I refer you again to my earlier comments about the length of life).

Do you believe that podcasts or videos can be effective tools for learning and staying up-to-date on industry trends?

Losing a large sum of money in a business venture can be very educational, but would you really want to lose a large sum of money? The more relevant question is whether there's a better way to learn / stay up to date on industry trends.

Would you be interested in participating in or creating a podcast or video series related to your business industry?

I prefer to reach literate people, like wot can read ;)

In truth its the type of thing that goes on my 'should do' list, and eventually slips onto the 'never done' list.

I have a fairly short attention span, but not sufficiently short to qualify as abnormal - so by definition my short attention span is normal, which means that content needs to be concise, punchy and relevant.

Finally, a personal no-no for me is life stories from people who undermine their past and upbringing in order to big- up their achievements (you know, the classic 'teacher said id amount to nothing' cliche)

Podcasts were/are indeed a treasure source for me, but during the work I prefer to listen to neutral things like lofi, chill or even oldies music. I follow some channels (like
) but for business related stuff I prefer the weekend, a rocking chair or at least my hammock and a good afternoon beer. ;)

I cannot learn by listening to someone rabbiting on about their life experiences and mentioning in passing something I need to know about. I have tried HMRC webinairs on useful topics but I get nothing from them.

If I read something (and I speed read) I can pick up what I need and go back to the bits I don't understand. You can'[t do that with a podcast.

Every time I say this, people look at me as if I'm daft. Come to think of it, every time I say anything people look at me as if I'm daft. Anyway... most audio apps will let you play podcasts at different speeds. I listen to most things at 1.3 times normal. It's still really easy to understand, and you get through 30% faster.

I know that's not the same as speed reading, but I thought I'd just throw it in there.

I think poor old @JCBrown is mega disappointed with the responses in this thread. I bet he thought everyone would jump in to say how much they love podcasts and videos and sh*t (given podcasts and videos have been in fashion over the last five minutes).

Every marketing "guru" and his dog moved on from telling us all to have Farcebook accounts and Shitt*er accounts and about how indispensable social is.

Twenty years ago, "local search" was the fad. Prior to that, long before Google existed, it was directories and getting multiple entries in the ODP. There's always some new 'must have'.

All the marketers are now preaching the gospel of videos and podcasts if you want more sales. And you lot, as usual, aren't playing.

    Damn you, all of you!

I've just listened to a couple - one on a subject I know lot about (and can't claim to be unbiased); the other, one of those rags to riches stories.

IMHO - both were too long, and both gave the speaker too much platform.

The finance one was essentially an advertorial for the broker's specific range of products, was dismissive of alternatives and, crucially specifically omitted obvious key options, such as Start Up Loans.

The rags to riches ones perpetuated the clichés of undermining the past (or creating false jeopardy) to built present achievements.

As host, you have the unenviable task of controlling those things - if you give people a platform to talk about themselves or their products, that is exactly what they will do. At great length.

But as a starter, I'd definitely keep them shorter - perhaps 10 minute edit with option to watch in full?

The point has been made a number of times that the podcasts and other presentations are too long.

Like most of use I don’t have the time to listen to an hour long podcast. But I would have time for a 10 minute edited summary where the key points were highlighted. If interesting enough I may be tempted to listen to the full story.

I like watching YouTube shorts. Some of them made me want to watch more of their talks and views.

A question for you @Ozzy: do you know if your target members (young, hungry startups) watch long podcasts?
