Hi admin and moderators.

I'm Andy - a Software Engineer.
Currently, I'm learning a new mobile development framework. So I should hand on a real app.

My idea is to build an iOS and Android app for UKBF:
+ Free
+ No ads
+ Commit not to share user's information project

So do i have permission to do it? Or what i can do to have permission to do this
Thanks
Andy

I doubt Sift will allow you access to the data. But you can ask them. Their contact details are in the footer of this page.

I think you probably would need special access to the database, since I suspect that is how the backend that generates the web pages work, and that would be a big risk and probably some work for the owners, for little/no guaranteed reward.

It's certainly worth having an actual deliverable to produce when learning something new, as you learn a lot more, but personally I would pick a project that isn't reliant on the compliance of an established 3rd party.

Having a special database access (via an official api) or not is just the way how will the mobile client be made.
+ You can see that there are a lot of website have their mobile apps by wrapping the whole webview.
+ Build from scratch with an official api
+ No api, using web scraping technique. With this solutions, UKBF they don't need to do any extra works.

Yeah, i totally got this concern

When you say 'wrapping the webview' you mean what precisely?

This site already appears to be mobile friendly, so I'm guessing anyone can view this forum and interact with it on a mobile browser. Not sure I see why they'd need an app.

Regarding web scraping, it's generally considered unfriendly and sites/hosting companies often put in place mechanisms to protect against it, so I'm not sure they'd be happy with you doing that.

It meant the app will use a webview ( in android ) or UIWebview ( ios) with a unchangable url ( target to a specified website).
They ship kinda a web browser and package it in the app.

It actually does the same as a browser does.
But it offers a better and neat UI. and faster cause we don't need to render the whole HTML Dom tree.
Rearrange the UI to help users access their desirer content easily. By shortcut to your favorite boxes, threads.
And many more features

Then make it and market it and see what happens.

You might get a few takers, but not many. There are a hundred or so regular UKBF posters. If 10% install the app that means around 20 users.

I won’t be one of them as I’m quite happy with the existing mobile version

The aim of making this app is not about money so how many users will use this app is not a big deal
Anyway, Im still waiting for a permission from Sift. I did send them an email. :3

I wasn’t talking about money either. I was just pointing out that very few people will bother to install the app.

I wouldn’t hold out much hope for Sift to answer. If they wanted an app they already have the necessary resources to build one.
