Why are the Government threatening to make mask wearing in shops compulsory ?

Thankfully it’s not an either/or so it doesn’t matter.

We won’t be seeing any more lockdowns anyway, except on a local level.

Taking into account exercise would be severely restricted wearing a facemask, I don’t think the negligible benefit of wearing them outdoors at all times outweighs the long term effect of lost regular exercise. And that’s one of the reasons it won’t happen.

In fact looking at Google Under Armour are already selling them and are sold out with a waiting list in place

And American Football have already incorporated Covid face masks into the helmets players wear

I appreciate for this step of Government. It's compulsory because shop is a place where lots of people came to purchase product, So that in that cases it's duty of shopkeeper to wear mask to avoid the chances to get infected with Covid19.

Perhaps strangely there does not appear to be a requirement for shop keepers to wear masks. Customers yes, staff not so much.

I went to visit my father in law in a care home yesterday, they've now made mask wearing compulsory -we have to stay 2 metres away and it's in the garden.

I have to say 2 hours of wearing a mask and being sat in hot sunshine was rather uncomfortable, I wouldn't want to be a shopkeeper wearing one for 8 hours.

The problem with any thread like this is nether side will ever convince the other they are right.

All that’s going to happen in 12 months time is someone is going to say ‘I told you so’. What we don’t know is which side that will be.

Due to confirmation bias it will probably be both

People are literally going to be muzzled as of Friday!

(unless you wanna get hammered in a busy pub, then it’s fine, no muzzle needed)

Well you can be muzzled if you want.
Other people have been wearing masks when shopping and won't make any difference.

I did notice last few weeks that a lot less people are wearing masks while shopping at the supermarket than they did before mid June. Perhaps someone told them the crisis is over.
Did anyone tell the virus?

Rather than 90% plus of the shoppers wearing masks (6 weeks ago), less than 20% were wearing masks last Friday lunchtime.

And people wonder why government needs to come up with a daft law.

The big question is - who will fine people?
Shops should not - they won't want to drive away customers by fining. Police will soon get sick of calls from retailers regarding masks.
So no one gets fined? Or just those who happen to have coppers near get fined?

What a load of absolute nonsense. Big scary (Dishonest) government sealing the fate of many more livelihoods by trying to lock the door after the horse has bolted!

How will wearing a mask seal the fate of anyones livlihoods?

More likely to encourage more people out as they will think if everyone is wearting a mask it will reduce the chance of infection.

Nope. Look at what happens / has happened when something like wearing cycling helmets is mandatory in certain countries. I’ll save you the effort of searching - less people cycle.

Ski helmets are optional on ski holidays

When I started ski-ing (40 years ago now) only little kids wore them who were still learning to ski

Now I would say 98 per cent of ski-ers wear them as they know the risks

And they don't have to wear them

And I would say there's more people ski-ing than ever before. (Pre Covid of course). And the helmets aren't cheap.

Less I’d say. Don’t forget, the big bad scary government spent a lot of breath telling us there was no need for them - and in fact they’d make life more dangerous because silly people would keep fiddling about with them and then picking strangers noses!

So either they were lying then, or they’re lying now.

Cycling helmets are a lot more specialist and expensive than a simple facemask though?

Nothing to do with that. You can pick them up for a tenner - it’s a polystyrene hat!

No, it creates the perception that cycling must be dangerous, that you might bump your head while riding a bicycle. So it puts people off doing it altogether.

Shopping is perfectly safe, there’s no reason whatsoever to introduce this pathetic layer of perceived risk, but then that’s this government all over.

Exactly. They’re optional.

Or you could do your own research rather than relying on government to save you.
Least then you'll know for certain that the risks you take are ones you choose. Not what government chooses for you.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Have banged my head a few times when coming off the bike. And broken bones, cuts and scrapes etc.
So if I was to ever ride a bike again I'd like to wear a helmet. And not just shorts and t-shirt on the rest of me!

they keep cyclists and motorists separate

its mostly cars that cause head injuries to cyclists.

Not in my experience both as a cyclist and a car driver. They use the same roads.
Some roads have a cycle way - however its not uncommon for the bike to have to move out of that due to turning or simply people parked up.
Don't think there's any cycle lane in my village at all on the roads.

If having to wear a mask stops someone going to a shop that - to me - is stupid. I also see not cycling because you have to wear a helemt as stpid as well.

Cool, so you don’t believe in the facts.

So the fact that masks are dangerous because people will keep touching them and will also take more risks in other ways is wasted on you?

Or has all that conveniently gone away?

I do believe in facts - you said said and showed that when made mandatory to wear helmets less people cycled. I checked that up and can see that is true. Why do you think I don't belive in facts?

Great. So I take it you wear a helmet when you’re in a car, as that’s where the majority of serious head injuries occur?

trying to reduce the transmission rate requires a collective effort -which I guess is the reason behind mask wearing. Most people will comply with something made compulsory.

Masks dont protect the wearer, which makes a collective effort even more important.

whether they are a benefit or not, I dont know. Govt advice is to wash hands before putting on and after taking off.....like that happens

Masks protect the wearer slightly from the larger water particles.
Most importantly you cannot touch your mouth with your hands - those filthy hands that have touched all sorts of surfaces since you last washed them. Until you take the mask off...

I wash my hands at home. I'll use a hand sanitiser when out before putting mask on. And after taking it off.
Basic hygiene rules - heck, some seem to not grasp the 'wash hands after handling willy' aspect even...
