Bank account for sole trader - even possible?

For the past ten years I've been using my current account for my sole trader activity, as I'm legally entitled, and it's fine as my payments are regular and indistinguishable from a wage. I now intend to expand the scope of my freelancing work and therefore need a dedicated business account.

My credit score is very high and I've no black marks against me. My only criterion is that it must be accessible online via desktop (as distinguished from an app).

You'd imagine it would be easy, right? Wrong.

Some, like Barclays and most of the big banks, don't actually cater for sole traders, only businesses registered with Companies House.

Some, like Metro Bank, are only too happy to set up a business account for me, all I need to do is 'pop' into their conveniently located premises as they don't do applications online or over the phone. Just a quick 600 mile round trip, I'll do it before breakfast tomorrow.

One bank, I forget which, was so puzzled at the concept of a sole trader trading under their own name as opposed to a business name they ground to a standstill, and by association so did the application. Clearly they had never before encountered such an outrageous situation.

Some, like Coconut and the multitude of 'simpler' banks, have business packages specifically tailored for freelancers... as long as you have a smart phone capable of running their app (newsflash: some of us don't live in the city and can't even get 2G let alone 5G).

Others offer me the choice of a package for startups, or a package for those who want to transfer their business accounts from another bank. As neither apply then I can't apply either.

Others demand that I must have a current account with them before I apply.

And so it goes on, and on, and on. So far, after checking out at least 20 banks I've yet to find a single one that I can even apply to. My list is nearly at an end.

Am I the only non-smart-phone-owning, established sole trader in the entire country?

Have had business bank accounts for sole trader with natwest, Santander, lloyds tsb and wife has had one with hsbc.
No idea which give online access via computer rather than smartphone for those accounts - have not kept up to date with non app access for sole traders.

Tide are promoting very heavily on this. They can give you an account number and sort code in about 15 minutes. My opinion its the fastest way to get yourself set-up! Good luck with it all!

Santander was next on my list. After speaking to customer support it's the first one that might actually be viable.

I posted a question on the Tide forum yesterday re desktop access. The site says, 'Yes! You can access your account from a desktop…’ then goes on to say, ‘…by using the QR code scanner found within your Tide app,' leading me to believe a Smartphone is mandatory.

To be honest 90 percent plus of my smartphone use is within the house using wifi. Handy even when not using data outside.

I didn't know you could do that. I know nothing about Smartphones. So I could get a PAYG phone and use it connected to my home WiFi as opposed to whatever carrier it's linked to?

Yes. Not that you need to as I know for a fact that Natwest and LLoyds both do sole trader business accounts that you can manage from their website and not an app, as I have them.

As do Nationwide, who have an app or website option.

Yes.
My wife takes the phone in the car to work, to save data she switches data off before she goes - its sometimes days and considerable phone internet use before I remember to switch data back on. All wifi in the meantime.

Running an ebay business my outside downloads can be just a few megabytes a month out of the gigabytes the companies give.

I could find an option for Business Current Accounts with Nationwide, only Business Savers.

Sorry, I was going off your original post. I use a private current account for use for business earnings, separate from my main current account. Have done so for 20+ years with nationwide, never had a problem. You can use your own name, or name t/a type format.

Always stuck with it due to low charges.

Looks like I'll have to get a SmartPhone, although I'd only use it for business banking and perhaps taking a photo of my dog.

So is that an official position of Nationwide, that they'll allow personal current accounts for sole-trader business? I'm wondering what would be the transaction threshold before they insisted on a business current account.

You would have to ask them, never had a problem myself. I have never mentioned I was using the account for business, but the T/A after my name is a giveaway. Never had any questions asked.

I have a Co-Op business account as a sole trader (mine is an FSB one now but didn't start that way.) They don't have an app that I'm aware of and their online banking does not update immediately - you have to go back after an hour to see any new payee or payment so it should be perfect for
Sounds like it.

If I recall correctly, quite a few personal current accounts (including Nationwide) have specific T&Cs that say you can't use it for business.

I would definitely recommend giving online banking providers such as a Tide a go, who offer a solution for sole traders.

Santander is probably your best bet, but failing that I would suggest Revolut subject to the following caveats:

Money isn't FSCS protected (not many challenger banks are other than Starling)
Faster payments don't happen fast, can take a few hours
There's a £6.95 a month fee

Access is via computer and they send a code to your email, but occasionally (new payees etc) they will send a code by text, so you need a phone you can get texts on at least.
