    Sorry if I sound a little old school here, but does anyone else have a serious issue with Windows 8?

    I've just bought a new Toshiba laptop with it installed, and I have to say I absolutely hate it. It's far from straight-forward.

    Does anyone know of a way to get rid of this new start menu? I just want a simple menu, not one where I'm having to search for 20 minutes with no luck.

    The reason M$ are bring back the start menu is because so many people hate 8. Me included.

    When I 1st installed windows 8 I absolutely hated it, I could of picked up my laptop and throw it out the window. Took some time getting used to it, still to this day I wouldn't say I love it its just usable :)

    I'm fairly sure with win8.1 you can set the operating system to boot straight to the desktop. I use windows 8 at home and love it. It was a bit of a shock to the system at first, but hey nobody likes change!

    I still struggle to get it to accept older software. It doesn't like a lot of the old DOS programmes, it borked when I tried to install apache and it gets very cranky if you want to play with CLI.

    I'm sure there are workarounds but good old XP never once asked me if was sure I wanted to do something 17 times. Try turning off all the services you don't need in Win8. Can't be done.

    Same here. It does start-up quick and can shutdown quick as well both +++ for me. So, Ok, stuff is missing from the desktop, easy fix, you just put in shortcuts. And you can lose the start up/programs screen if you want to skip it. You just need to learn the new OS. Anyway, how is MS going to make millions and millions......

    Who starts up and shuts down these days? Even back in the days of Win 95 you could put it too sleep and have it back up and running in a few seconds. I can't remember the last time I shut down a computer.

    Windows updates happen when I want them to happen. I just restart overnight and it's all done. Regular OS maintenance keeps everything clean.

    It appears that the only reason you like Win8 is because it has a fast boot. Forget the annoying UI, inability to do anything useful with the OS and incompatibility with a whole range of software - it has a fast start so that's all right then.

    Hmmm, not quite. Don't think I said that. Although the bootup is fast its not the only reason I like Windows 8.

    I have found the Windows 8 OS to be very stable and not once have I or any my clients have a blue screen or any major performance related issues with the operating system.

    Yes the interface with the start menu is garbage but there are many ways round that as described by others above.

    I wouldn't say it is has an "inability to do anything". I run by business on a laptop running the OS so its perfectly capable of the job. Obviously you have had problems with software compatibility so your not going to be a huge fan but I must admit all the software my clients are using has been compatible so haven't experienced the same problems that you have.

    Got to say I love Windows 8.1. I have it running on a dual screen PC and it is just easier to use than a dual screen under Windows 7. It is just smoother and the improved ability to run applications side by side works great for me.

    Back in the days of Windows 3.1 I was working in computer sales and I hear the same thing every time a new version of Windows comes out. What we have to remember is that each new version is exactly that, a whole new version. Windows 8 will never be Windows 7.x and nor should we expect it to be.

    I think the biggest problem is people dont switch versions of Windows because they want to, they do it because they get a new PC for one reason or another. As a result they find themselves in a new environment whilst trying to shift stuff from their old PC - this of course can be a real pain - but that is rarely the fault of the new OS

    Fast boot diminished within four months [heavy business use with company restrictions], I hate the new "cubic" versions of usual software like Adobe Reader opens as default for example.
    Getting the start menu back as default was a pain - I simple do not understand MS...

    My main mobile machine is a relatively old HP pavilion laptop that originally came with Windows 7.

    I updated to Windows 8 (which took quite a while to get familiar with). Then, the Windows 8.1 version was released. That made everything better in my opinion. The main issue was the lack of consideration for the desktop version. All of those were fixed in 8.1.

    However, I had major compatibility issues with my AMD dual graphics driver which was not yet ready for Windows 8.1. I cannot extend my display to another monitor because of that.

    It was a major frustration. I ended up going back to Windows 7. *sigh*

    @StartUpC - Start up times will diminish no mater which Windows platform you use - it gets cluttered with various things as you install different bits of software (including all those Windows updates from Microsoft). I recently purchased a Windows 8.1 system and gave my old Windows 7 computer to my grandson. In doing so I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7 - with a fresh install its boot time dropped to about 25% of what it was when I had it.

    No doubt the same will happen with Windows 8 and every other version of Windows to come.

    @RP Branding - Sorry to add to your misery but Windows 9 is just around the corner.

    I have actually formatted my computer to be able to go back to Windows 7. After the massive hit that was Windows 7 I really did not think that Microsoft would be foolish enough to do something quite as drastic as Windows 8 – turns out I was wrong.

    I think the true power of Windows 8 is when it comes to connecting you to everything. My tablet and phone are now connected to my desktop and the cloud in ways that were just not possible in Windows 7. There is a complete package there in those terms.

    If the pundits are to be believed version 9 will see a kind of a return to Windows 7 desktop.

    I have noticed that no one has complained that Win 8 can not do a specific task, which basically means the only issue people are having is the new lay out and way of doing things.

    Latest rumours circulating about the Windows 9 launch is that the new front end will be for phones and tablets only. Desktops and laptops will have a standard desktop only. These rumours seem to be coming from a couple of different sources, but they are still just rumours.

    The question that leaves is what happens to all those manufacturers who have been putting touchscreen's in to laptops - is that all to be abandoned?

    Quoted for the truth! People dislike change, the buttons have moved, the menus are not where they were. It's not worse, just different.

    Generally we find people dont like it, they are forced by some hardware update to change over, they use it for 6 months, then if they have to go back to a previous version of the software, they cant understand how they used it like that.

    That said we still downgrade the majority of our customers computers to Windows 7 from windows 8, however this is due to the financial implications of retraining non IT savvy people to use new OS's

    Skype app is wonderful on a tablet, not so hot on a desktop. I did the same as Gerry and installed the desktop version.

    Dont forget to uninstall the Win 8.1 tile version though, other wise when you get a call both versions of the software ring
