And then does it tend to work smoothly

Plus I suppose any recommendations

It can be as easy as adding a little bit of code to your pages like with something like zopim but these are usually subscription services that are hosted elsewhere and cost more. Alternatively if you have some technical knowledge then you can host your own and use something like Livezilla or LiveHelpMessenger. (Google to find out their links)

We also looked into it and then finally decided against it because
(a) we were advised that live chat software like LiveZilla guzzle up bandwidth and in general slow down your website, and
(b) unless you are prepared to man the chat (and also cover the cost for this) 24/7 you might actually lose customers who would expect to find you online to chat.
Hope this helps.

If you're not available they show "offline" or "away" so I don't think that's really a problem.
They work very well if a customer is just about to do an order and they have a query because it's so much easier than phoning and they have their answer in seconds.

Adding live chat script is piece of cake; all you have to do is to locate any good service provider free/paid, get their code and place it on all pages where you want to show the chat widget. I use Snapengage and PureChat at my sites and they are good enough in handling lets say 200 chats per day.

It seems strange to use two different ones

Any good reason ?

We are using a program called Pure Chat.

It's totally free (at the moment) and have had no problems at all

Hi Guys, We offer live chat solutions to UK business's.

Obviously, I'm somewhat biased, however yes. I think they work smoothly.

Typically, the process to get live chat on your site is as follows:
- You sign up with the provider
- You then login to the dashboard
- You then get your HTML code, or a plugin for your CMS ( Wordpress etc ) and then add that code to your website.
- You then mark yourself as "online" in the chat console and await messages.

Provider to provider will obviously change somewhat.

As for "Do hosted chats work" , Id say yes.
We haven't had any major outages in years plus you get some extra value add like:
- No downloads
- No installation on your servers
- No worries about bandwidth or hosting charges.
- No worries about "upgrading" the software.

olark.co.uk is one of the market leaders. I believe they have over 25,000 users worldwide. Extremely simple and powerful to use.

Regarding the points on availability and resourcing, this can consume time however compare resolving a problem immediately via live chat to receiving an email and the string of emails back and forth for the same resolution.
