Sky Fibre Broadband

Hi all,

I've got the normal sky broadband with phone and when i have my son on his xbox and my daughter on the Ipod and my missus on the laptop, it really takes forever when i try and do some work via the internet. Calling Sky i find my broadband is only 3MB :(

Anyway i've signed up to their super fast fibre broadband which i think is part of BT's openreach and they say that i could expect upto 40MB. Well to be honest if i had 10x faster than i had now i'd be happy. Some pages on my forum takes 10 seconds to load at the moment:(

Anyone else on Sky Fibre? what sort of speeds are you getting from your service and are you happy with it?

Mines getting done next monday, so looking forward to it ;)

Depends entirely how far you are from the local exchange and the quality of the line. If you are on 3Mbps at the moment you must be quite far away but 20 - 30Mbps will hopefully be realistic. At our house we can only get 2Mbps with Sky and no fibre as yet so count yourself lucky! I'm sure you'll notice a great improvement!

Would add, even on 3Mbps you should be able to browse the web with little delays. If you keep having problems I would check out if you have wifi interference perhaps.

Thanks Chris will look into it, but getting the fibre done next week so looking forward to that, i would imagine i'm about 2 to 3 miles away from the exchange, i see it as i drive into town, thats not too bad is it??

I switched to fibre with a home hub and it is as stable as can be. As fast as I need in reality and £20 a month well spent.

I was down to around 6mb or so with high noise attenuation or whatever gobbledegook nonsense dictates speed and around 2km or so from exchange.

I switched to fibre with a home hub and it is as stable as can be. As fast as I need in reality and £20 a month well spent.

yeah its £10 a month for the next 6 month, although there was a £50 set up charge, the fact that they couldn't take the payment for the order when i did it cos of a technical fault, they did it next day and told me i didn't have to pay the £50 setup/Installation charge, Now thats a surprise :D

Just moved from BT fibre to Sky and so far all seems fine, download speeds are around 38meg and upload is 10meg.

It's possible thought that your issue isn't with your connection speed but your wireless setup, you can use something like inSSIDer to see what other networks are around you to ensure you are using a channel which isn't already saturated with traffic. It will also show the signal strength from your network.

It's worth noting that fibre products aren't offered to those who can't get above 15mbps.

The point making here is, if it's a fibre product- it's most likely and underlying fault causing the speed to drop.

BT Openreach (who carry out the work) have a guaranteed throughput of 15mbps, so mention that if you don't get any joy.

Worth noting too (and none of them tell you this..!) that's it FTTE and not your door!

Do you mean Fibre To The Exchange ?

The product as sold is always specified as either FTTP or FTTC e.g. Fibre To The Premises OR Fibre To The Cabinet as in your local street cabinet that serves your premises, in which case the last section will always be a copper or Aluminium pair, but in my experience the BTOR engineers do try and find as good a quality pair as they can to make the final connection to your premises, so you can maximise the capacity of the bearer Fibre service back to the Exchange.

So the fibre either terminates in your street cabinet or is terminated at the master socket in your premises, you never get native Fibre termination unless you are ordering a dedicated Fibre service which by its very nature is not a Broad Band product..

Yep yep - what I mean is the marketing hype around it doesn't explicitly mention that you're not getting a direct fibre service yet, the vast majority of people who "have got fibre" think exactly that :)

I agree certainly in the Consumer market but Business customers do at least seem to be more aware, however having said that the number that I come across on residential packages who then complain about the service / quality.. There IS a difference between Business packages and consumer packages and you need to make sure you are asking specific questions before you sign up !! Bit like card payments really !

If you go cheap expect an equivalent service..

The sky fibre service isn't too bad to be fair. I use it at home and get speeds of 23mb down and 8mb UP. As mentioned the reality is it's BT Openreach and BT will do the install and provide the modem (still need a sky router as well) and it'll run over your phone line (new faceplate) i.e fibre to cabinet.

That said I provide and manage direct fibre and wireless leased services for busnesses and it's not on the same planet, (up to 2Gbps) but for the price, I'm happy enough.

Well the service is fine for me the most i've had with the broadband checkers is 38mb down to about 10mb but they say it takes a couple of weeks to find the norm.

You do notice a remarkable increase in page load speeds i have a forum with some 80,000 posts and i've noticed the page loads increase in speed.

The only issue i have is that now i can't seem to hear anyone when they call the landline :(

Is this some sort of side effect?

    Just a note for anybody considering using Sky fibre for business and VoIP.

    It principle fibre is a great product for business because it's got such a high upload speed. It means that you can run a handful of phones and PCs in the same office quite comfortably.

    BUT the Sky router is utter rubbish, it's locked down by MAC code and T&Cs so it can't be changed and it has SIP ALG turned on and it can't be turned off.

    This means that it can only support 1 call at a time.

    So if you're going for fibre and want to use VoIP too, get BT's version.
