What do you exactly do for SEO now?

I actually believe very little that he, Fishkin or any SEO says but as far as I am concerned, if we are talking solely about links, the safest single type of link building is in content links on quality/relevant websites. Overdo it then you might get penalised. Overdo any link building then the same might happen.
So you cite Matt Cutts, but you don't believe him? :p

According to OWG's experience, any links, including those built naturally, can get you penalised. Personally, I don't believe this, but at this time, I'd be reluctant to advise anyone that any form of link building is 'safe'.

"Very little" ;) I do believe though that if you are going to use any link building methods, this is one of the safest. Im bored now so going for a walk up to the Big Buddha.

Personally I'm happy to tell people that they should continue to link build; with a caveat - though I've had the same caveat even before all the algorithm changes.

Have a link (otherwise known as an advert) where your potential customers will see it, have it appear in such a way that it will engage them and get them to click on it, and if paying for it then 'nofollow' it.

Also, it's not as if hiring an SEO is something you can go about quickly. The SEO industry is up there with the most shark infested of waters bursting with people who want to take their customers money and move onto the next victim. And then we have the recent algorithm updates which have seen people penalised heavily for unnatural link profiles, all done by SEO "Pro's" .

Quite .

I would be more than happy if no one employed an SEO.;):D:D:D:D

There is no safe way to manually build links. Period.

Yes there is, period, and there always has been.

However, there are always plenty of people with limited imagination. :p

For SEO, we do forum posting, blog commenting, directory submission, social book marking, article submission.

You can only call it "SEO" if you expect it to work. Those strategies by themselves are likely to tank a site, not help it.

That is coming from the mouth of what looks to be a building surveyor, not that I don't trust them but hey

You shouldn't have to trust, as a full time internet marketer you should know.

Forum links, blog comments, articles etc etc are serving me very well for one of the most competitive markets on the internet and this is stable ranking i am talking about. The links were built nearly 12 months ago.

Do follow links ofcourse, non of that no follow ********.

I'm not a building surveyor. I guess i would be classed as a property renovator.

I know there is a lot more to life than a few heavily spammed blog pages , article directories.

I am part time internet marketer ;)

I'm not saying it doesn't work just not done correctly 98% of the time, and with the latest Happy Feet crusher i would be careful with article marketing etc..

The other guy is a surveyor..

Is anyone in the know really likely to share their methods on an open forum? I for one certainly wouldn't.

    Why not?

Helping others at no cost is how a community benefits and an open forum such as this is perfect.

I have had so much invaluable help over the years I just can't understand your attitude.

The SEOs on here have never shown much willingness to explain in detail how to get links.

It's understandable, given that most of them get links that are either

    (a) low value, high volume (and they don't want to admit it)

    or

    (b) have value, but shouldn't have (and they don't want to draw google's attention to that)

    or

    (c) bought (and they definitely don't want to draw google's attention to that!)

    Unfortunately SEO is not patentable.

All you need to know about SEO is on the internet.

I think the SEO's are very helpful on here, but there is a line to the information most will give out.

As we have to earn a crust working in an intensely competative environment.

Would that be somewhere in the grey to black area by an chance?

Not necessarily. It could be links that google still attaches value to.

For example, links from article directories used to have value. Nowadays (as far as I understand), they don't.

That doesn't mean article marketing was grey or black hat. Just that google decided that they're better off ignoring these links.

Steve, I love your posts..and i just visited your blog and i think it needs social network share buttons so i can easily share you blog on my social profiles. I am sure there will be many others who would want to share

Thanks. TBH, I think I've blogged once in the last 12 months, so the lack of these icons is not what's holding my blog back. :D

You can get your rank back with Organic traffic through SEO, if you can use it in the proper way. You should submit articles, directory, do social bookmarking etc. in the different site whose Page Rank is high and Alexa is low, so that you will have a Organic traffic to your website, which will help to increase the PR of your site.

    Hello,

You can do SEO by yourself, but it will take you some time to see the results. the other option is to use the services of a SEO company.

If you do SEO by yourself, do the following:
    -focus on 4-6 keywords
    -build links
-build video and promote it in YouTube
    -write content

    good luck!

Have you lost traffic because you're falling down the rankings on Google, or is it something else about your website that's the problem?

Without knowing the details of your site or circumstances it's not going to be easy to help with the problem, but there are many more ways to promote that don't need SEO, like email marketing, forums, articles, ad exchanges or traffic exchanges (although if it's in Russian they won't be allowed), social media (if you're into that kind of thing) etc...

Write a blog a day and target a few keywords. The content will get you noticed by Google and you will start to rank for longtail keywords. You should also try getting more involved in social media so you are not 100% relying on Google.

Don't let Google have you by the balls!

All my sites have been Penguin-slapped. I've spoken to a few SEO companies, but it's clear they don't really know what to do, post-Penguin. Vague talk of social-networking sites is all they can offer.

I have always thought the backlinks method of ranking sites was stupid. Nobody links to a page unless there is a photo of a kitten on it, these days! They can't be bothered.

My main site had a bounce rate of just 30% with about 600 uniques a day, before the update. It had no ads and was full of good information. The only reason I paid for links, years ago, was that was the only way to get ranked or even seen.

As for quality content, Google is a joke. You can run a 4000 word wikipedia article in German through an online translation page and the gobbledigook English page can sometimes be blasted to page 1, in 48 hours.

I don't think anyone really knows whats going on anymore.

Get yourself a sea leopard - they like penguins :p

Prior to G all you needed to do was repeat your keyword numerous times on page. Do you think that is better?

The actual number of sites that were penguined is quite small, and many undoubtedly deserved it, even if it was due to poor link building. If you have good content, I would expect your visitors to keep returning and passing the word regardless of your G position.

Personally I like the changes, made some previously tough propositions a little easier :D
