My dad retired as a GP ten years back.

For years he has been banging on that there was repressed research into cancer.

A guy came up with a theory in the 70s that maybe cancer wasnt an over growth of cells, but an inability of the body to break down cells as it normally does. Hence tumours.

This guy's theories were pilloried and he was forced to shut up in a similar way to the doubters of global warming.

My dad always maintained that if this research was allowed to happen that we'd find other ways to treat cancer because we'd look at it in a different way.

Yesterday I read this. It's shocking how previously held popular and estabished theories can stifle research, but it comes out in the end. Rather like it has with global warming.

You telling me my asthma may be 'cos me mam used to ram Calpol down us throat?!

It's actually not just a myth.

Paracetamol usage in under twos raises the possibility of asthma by many times.

Goggle it.

It was a decision to ban kids aspirin in the 70s because 4 people in the whole of europe died from taking aspirin.

4 kids died and hundreds of thousands suffer from asthma- how is that right apart from for the drug companies providing asthma relief drugs?

When I was at school in the 50's no one in the whole school had asthma,in fact I don't think many people had heard of it.

I decided a long time ago its prevelance today may be down to the sterile environment kids grow up in allied to traffic fumes and the stress and lack of attention kids suffer.

Even an old cynic like me finds it hard to believe drug companies are hidding cures for profit.

But would I be surprised.:|

Quite worrying actually...I've always stayed away from allergens and ibuprofen etc as they do (and are well known to ) exacerbate symptoms/cause attacks etc, but generally am never completely symptom-free. I'm quite a heavy user of paracetamol and was addicted at one point and never ever considered that it could be assisting that curse of asthma and no doctor has ever mentioned or questioned anything...if anything they just prescribe more painkillers and stuff.

Phew!
For a minute I thought you were going to say your poor dad had cancer!

Fact is, so long as you have commercial pharma companies, you will never have a cure for cancer.

Fact is, so long as you have commercial pharma companies, you will never have a cure for cancer

Can you back up that statement?

You know as a rule I never google stuff to back up an argument - as you can find something to confirm any view or opinion somewhere online.

I'm sure if you looked into it using sites and sources you trust you will find my assertion conformed, although direct evidence will be unlikely to be found as these companies are very good at what they do.

I had heard that there's been a cure for Cancer for over 30 years, the Government's across the world decided not to make it available due to cost and that Cancer is also used as a testing modification problem.

I.E. In another 30 years, we'll all look like this...

Surely there are more people all over the world with Cancer than there is of those with Aids or HIV.

The current estimated human population for the planet earth in 2010 is 6,865,300,000 by the United States Census Bureau. The United Nations estimates that world population will be over the 7,000,000,000 mark in 2011. Recent U.N. organized surveys performed in multiple countries have found the average percentage of people who suffer from some sort of cancer is 31%. The American Cancer Society has found similar numbers in its studies of North and South America.

Read more: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_percentage_of_people_have_cancer_in_the_world#ixzz1t8EgvCD3

Obviously 2 years later, this could well have differed a lot.

http://www.avert.org/worldstats.htm

An estimated 34 million people across the world with HIV/Aids, sounds a lot, but in comparison... is it really?

an average of 2128243000 living with Cancer? (I'm crap at Mathematics, so I apologise if I'm incorrect.) :)

I always had a theory that cancer cells were caused by heat. Carcenogenics.

That may meet with the theory that the body can't break down certain cells properly...

just a thought

My wife was diagnosed with bowl cancer two months ago:(,she has always been a health conscious person and has never smoked or drank alcohol.

Regardless of whether there is or isn't a cure the treatment she has received and will be receiving for many months to come has been exceptional, and i can't praise or thank the surgeons and hospital staff for the professionalism and compassion they have given us .The NHS has it's critics, i for one can only go on personal experience. My wife may not survive but it wont be through lack of care and support from a lot of dedicated people .

Have to say Shearly I agree with you on this - I didn't know a single person who had asthma at school (60s and 70s). Inner city, nobody was well off, probably would be classified as "deprived" today, so not full of well fed toffs with strong lungs.
Working in a school a few years ago and at least half the kids (in a nice area, well off families) all had inhalers. Lots of them overweight too - another thing you didn't get back in the olden days. Of course, we ate alot of cabbage back then. No burgers.

Internetspaceships - I am glad this title did not turn out to be what I thought it did my friend. :)

There is a lot that people can do in their own lives to help prevent Cancer and there are many theories about this but I strongly strongly recommend people to watch these videos. There are 5 of them and parts of it are heartbreaking but it is very educational and brings so many things together.

The Human Cost of Animal Testing

It is in 5 parts and are numbered. It is not only about animal testing, it is about the pharmaceutical racket, there are many who have a vested interest in keeping people ill.

Thank you very much, was your Thursday succesful ;) :D :)

There is a book done, called Cancer, Cure and Cover up by Patrick Rattigan. A good bloke he is but one of the best books is Slaughter of the Innocent by the late great Hans Ruesch. A beautiful man he was and gave many years to the fight against vivisection. It is really not an animal rights issue. Pietro Croce summed it up in his title in his book - vivisection or science.

Of course aside form this part of society's problem and has been manipulated into this over the years is dependance. People play the name game and are no longer responsible for themselves.

If they trip up rather than "tough, I have hurt my knee but should have looked where I was going instead of doing the walking texting thing" it is "where's my pocket measure to see who I can sue".

When I was a kid I used the read a Comic called 2000AD

There was a story in it where someone found a cure for the common cold. It was actually a plant that sucked the cold virus out of you. The pharmaceutical companies tried to kill him and in the process his ship (yes a spaceship before you lot giggle) crashed and the plants escaped and started to breed all over the planet.

This was written circa 1981 and people were aware that selling a product thousands of times is better than selling it once. It's common sense really.

Sadly I can't see how they are prepared to allow people to suffer though in the name of profit. Which I firmly believe they do.

The paracetamol/asthma thing is no coincidence and income stream from effectively causing asthma is worth billions.

The same can probably be said of various other chronic conditions.

Scribe - wish you and your family all the best.

The issue here is what we entrust with the state and what we entrust to the profit seeking firms. We started transferring policing, military and health. Is there a need for a debate as to the level of state we seek in some sectors?

@internetspaceships - i confess to being another 2000AD fan - and check if you've still got any...recently sold mine and got £100 for them!

Scribe - my best wishes are with you both...went through a brush with the "big C" myself last year (not fun) but couldn't agree more about the quality of care... the system may be suffering, but the people within it are some of the best... be strong mate... may the odds be on your wife's side...

I'm not sure why they're talking about this as if it's new, it was written about (in terms of searching the info via the web as far back as 2003/2004) I suppose now it's the case that they're now on the verge of releasing the 'miracle' drug.

Where I live there is/was (this is old info I am referring to, so figs may have changed...but unlikely to have been reduced) a 40% higher incidence of asthma in children than anywhere else in the Uk and it is believed to be directly related to traffic pollution which is also a major problem here. One of the Gp's here is /was a leading author on the topic.

I don't think it has anything to do with pollution - in my view it is all to do with the massive amount of food additives that today's children are consuming. Up until the 1970s pollution levels were much higher than they are today, cars ran on leaded fuel, factories belched out all sorts of unpleasant smoke, parents smoked with their babes on their laps, we had open coal fires, damp housing for many and yet asthma levels were very much lower.
What we didn't have then were additive filled synthetic "food" being fed to our children on a daily basis in massive quantities with virtually no nutritional value.
A frozen pizza, a Pot Noodle, Chicken Tikka ready-meal, a burger & chips etc... these are not suitable meals for a growing child or a pregnant woman who hopes to have a healthy baby.
Rant over!

Ladies, it's down to paracetamol usage. The research and data to show this is everywhere.

We moved as a nation from aspirin to paracetamol and since then the asthma rates have escalated.

There's an article here that uses noted publications like the Lancet as it's basis.

The opening line is pretty much answering the exact point that we are discussing here with regards to asthma.

We've all seen the rise in occurrence.

"The global rise in asthma over the past 50 years, which has mystified doctors for decades, may be linked to the growing use of paracetamol, researchers suggest today.

A major international study, involving more than 200,000 children in 31 countries, has found those treated with paracetamol in the first year of life had a 46 per cent increased risk of developing asthma by the age of seven."

I knew a lad who died from asthma attack while school age back in the 80's and had a friend who suffered badly from asthma (also 80's) I am not sure either were candidates for high calpol use.

This is what you call false logic

Those children would also have had beast/powder milk, did that then cause asthma?

You can't link one thing to another so randomly...

We're not saying that all the asthma was caused by paracetamol. We're talking about the massive increase in cases of asthma.

There always was asthma, just not a lot of it.

I think you'll also find that the studies are a little more professional than being "random."

There have been quite a lot of them too. More so since it's becoming apparent that the link is more than just a theory.

The vasy majority of 'research results' that appear in the mass media represent 'false logic' and there is absolutely no point reading it. If you want reputable scientific studies the best place to find them is via an accredited scientific publication and even then some worthy debate is neccessary to establish the studies merits. This can be done on a science forum which will often reveal enlightening and often contradictory opinions from 'experts'.

It's always a bit tenuous to link a particular product to a particular condition. A few years ago there was a big report issued that linked underarm deodorants to breast cancer. The research showed that nearly all women who had developed breast cancer had used underarm deodorant - which is probably true. They published results that implied the breast cancer was therefore caused by the use of deodorant.
Of course, you cannot completely discount a possible link, but in all honesty I don't think I know a single woman who DOESN'T use underarm deodorant. Few of them (thankfully) have developed breast cancer.
Likewise, paracetamol - practically every parent will at some time have used Calpol (paracetamol based) to ease the pain of teething etc on their children. Not all of these children will develop asthma although some of them undoubtedly have.
Is there a link? Possibly, maybe - causes will always be dependant on a number of personal and unique factors.
