As someone who deals with ecommerce businesses on a daily basis this is a bit of a question that I feel uneasy about asking though I really want the answer.

What is the best way to find suppliers in China? there are so many sites out there and I have always been wary of them as feel a lot are probably scam sites, however there must be lagitimate ones out there its just know which ones.

When It comes to UK or USA sites I find it easy to tell a good site from a scam site however with sites selling chinese products I just find it near impossible though that may be more down to my own feelings rather than proper research.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

Hello.

My view is that it depends on what you want, how much of it and at what price! Your notes infer that what you really want advice on is not how you find a supplier in China, but how do you find supplier using the internet.

I have never bought anything from China without visiting a lot of factories and choosing the one that meets our needs best. Using a Chinese based agent. But I am fortunate in that the size of the orders allow for that.

Whatever site you use there is high risk, which needs to be reduced and this can only be done to a limited extent using just the net.

Incidentally, the Chinese New Year holidays have just started, so you wont get as many responses from our Chinese friends as usual.

Yes, Our holy chinese new year, this year is dragon year, half month to one month holidays for chinese new year up to different factories, wish you good luck to find a good supplier in China, many of chinese believe, watch people's eyes to read their mind, if you got the feeling right, rely on this person who you think you can trust, it is just a little bit like a marriage, isn't it ? :D

Good factory - Bad sales = Unsmooth business->failure
Good Sales - Bad Factory = Dead business
Good Sales+ Good facatory = you are going to be rich.
Above is only my personal opinion.

Happy New Year:D

Hi

Finding a supplier is just the start............

Then there is comparing the different qualities, the different prices, negotiating with the factory, approving the samples, inspecting the production, checking the consignment, arranging the packing, choosing the shipper, preparing all the documentation, etc etc........

Not easy.

Best of luck

Within the Chinese suppliers there are two kinds of Chinese suppliers you need to avoid:

1. Completely scam suppliers: These can be individuals claiming to be companies, "fly by night" companies (lots of these in the Chemicals Industry), or companies that are legally registered but will send you completely junk goods after sending you genuine top quality samples with the intention of fraud. Identifying each of these requires a thorough background check of the companies and is almost always a lot easier to do when you are sitting here in China.

2. Secondly, you have genuine suppliers who genuinely have stock or a production line, but may not have the production line for the particular product that you order for them. For e.g. lets say the supplier makes "pen drives" but you need SD Cards, a lot of these suppliers would tell you they make SD Cards too, because they want the business. Of course, they then reply on their friend's factory to supply these. These is a recipe for disaster, as in order to hide the source, they won't cooperate with QC that much. SD Cards is probably not a good product example but this is more true for more complex products.

A lot of Quality Inspectors would check a factory, but either forget to check the production line for a particular product or the factories would not cooperate saying that they can't show you the production line for your particular products due to X, Y, Z reasons, such as "production line is unique and can't be shown", repairs are being made, etc. It's these suppliers that are even harder to catch, because they will pass most background checks you do and you might still end up with low quality goods without a factory visit and a thorough factory investigation.

Thanks Graeme. I am sure someone could use the info :)

Agreed !

By the way....A good inspector would know how to handle a factory that does not cooperate with regards inspecting the factory, production line, goods etc etc.

If the inspector is easily fobbed off, then he is not a good inspector.

Very True. This is where an inspector needs more then just technical knowledge. A lot of people/inspectors underestimate the importance of being "mentally strong" during factory or loading inspections. When you are on the ground doing a loading inspection, a lot of manufacturers try all kinds of techniques to speed up the inspection process for e.g.

1. By saying they need to finish the loading in X hours/minutes because they need to load 5 more containers that day and there isn;t enough space/manpower.

2. By having 5 people around you putting pressures in various ways.

3. By mentioning how opening too many boxes could affect the safety of the boxes, etc..

Handling such situations is what differentiates a good inspector from an average one.

Either go there, review and audit the factory yourself. Inspect the goods yourself before shipment. That's the only way to guarantee it.

Failing that, we have colleagues based in Shanghai who can conduct the inspection for you before it leaves the factory.

Never trust sites. 9/10 you will come across traders who tells you they own a factory and produce! They will add their cut on and requirements gets lost in translation. I've heard a few who runs away after receiving deposits. eek.

Well,as a manufacturer.I could hardly agree.
We do need more businesses, maybe we dont have the production line of "SD cards".
There is another reason-we can get better price than you do and better conmunication than you do.
This part wont make as much profits as our own products do but we want to show you that we can help you a lot,we offer convenience.
Only if your supplier is respon for every single quality problem,I mean a good supplier.you still can trsut your supplier no matter they have this production line or not.
Money will curb the " SD card" supplier for you,you have to deposit to them first and we wont do that untill they hand all items over to us cuz we are partner factories, and that is the reason we can easily get a bottom price and we can make phone call or visit them to solve problem within a day.You dont know what will happen during production and this is China.I know you cant do that.
Pls note that what I said is only work for "relative good".
We supplying imitation jewels made of alloy, brass and stainless steel,so if you buy these items,no problem, and if you want platic hair accessories like hair band or something,we can find it from our partner factories. They sell this 1 to us but 2 at least to you cuz you are from other country,we give you 1.5 maybe,So we can help you save some money and we know how to QC relative goods.
You know what I mean?

Well,no matter what, you people make big money than us (supplier) anyway.
