Newsagents - Your Help please

Hi

I am Gavin and my dream is to open a newsagents , I have 18 and think that age will hold me back. I am looking for as much help from other newsagents to help me , Just giving me help and inforamtion so if there are any out there please drop me an email.

I think I have some good ideas and would like to bounce them off people who are in the know, also I am needing help with VAT and payments ect ect. At the end I hope to know if this is what I defenatly want to go into

I am not a newsagent but have two friend who are/were so know some of the inside information. Unfortunately I can't think of anything positive to say - and I know when something is your dream you want encouragement not negativity.

I can give you a long list of the downsides but won't post them here unless you specifically want me to.

The only upside I can think of is that it is a good occupation if you like meeting different people from all walks of life as it is very sociable.

Have you worked in one and done those 5am starts day in day out? That should give you a good indication as to whether you will at least enjoy the job, business considerations apart.

Yes I am aware of alll the downsides and yes there are alot

I currently work in a newsagents and start at 5am every staurday and sunday

Hi Gavin

Our family business is in the newsagent/off license business, i used to work in ours since i was at the age of 14/15 it is very hard work to actually manage one, however the up side is there is good profit to be had if it goes well, however with tesco's opening up on every corner nowadays its getting more and more competative, if you need any help at all jus pm me

I have the strangest feeling of dejavu with this thread.

Please move on from this idea. The only newsagents making money right now are long established shops in good locations, mainly larger villages that lack a tescos but even these are loosing ground daily.

You have to come up with another idea as you will regret this.

Not to old yet im 19 now, i would say though without the addition of alcohol its really hard these days, relying on just a newsagent is going to prove very difficult unless you take over an existing running business.

Again i did suggest running one of the Haddows which is trading good but doesnt have enough to manage a full staff but would run well with a owner/operator system.

These are mostly in great city areas etc
