Phone Hacking

Just heard on the wireless Ford are withdrawing their advertising from the News of the World until any inquiry is completed and the situation is made clear. It's in respose to the allegation that a private detective acting for the News of the World hacked into the phone of Milly Dowler.

I hope more big companies and advertisers follow suit, and that scum bag paper is burried once and for all.

(Regardless of the outcome of any inquiry!!!!!)

Just my opinion of course.

They didn't hack into the phone but the voicemail - which is stored on the phone company server. The voicemail was full so the hacker then deleted the message they had already listened to in order (I assume) to listen to more or to allow fresh ones to come in.

The relatives (or police) were monitoring the messages and so they thought Milly had deleted them and that gave them hope that she was alive.

It just shows the depths that some journalists will sink to in order to get an edge over the others and thus get an exclusive (which makes them more money). Whoever did it is a disgusting person with no self-regulation of morals. I wouldn't cry if the paper was also brought to its knees over this and a clear sign posted for any other journalist who ventures into hacking personal and private information. People are a commodity for a lot of journalists and once there is a story then they don't care whose "roses they trample".

The S#n has been shown to have printed lies and profited from it and it's time to tighten up and stop them using lines such as "in the public interest".

You're quite right. Some reports say phone, others voicemail, but I believe it was the voicemail that was hacked. Giving the false impression the poor child was alive and giving the police and parents false hope.

How much more pain does this poor family have to be subjected to.

I hope everyone involved in this dispicable incident(s) rots in jail. But they wont of course.

Yes it appears to have been the voicemail but most reports interchange the words phone and voicemail which just leads to confusion.

Your voicemail can be accessed by anyone, anywhere as long as they get the username (I guess the phone number) and the passcode. I don't know much about it but I guess it's a default passcode unless you set it. Even if set then it may just take a couple of hundred attempts to guess the code........I'm not sure if the VM gets locked if you try to hack it. My guess is that the person called Milly's phone; I think you can then press a key to access their VM and then it asks for a passcode (why does it do this......maybe I'm wrong but I think you can dial your own number if you loose your phone and then access your VM). Most people probably don't change from the default one so my guess is that is what the journalist did. I rang myself and tried it and it worked.

I'd personally like to see an end to the press and most of the Tv media that infect our lives.

Why is a free press held in such high regard when it does nothing but promote it's own interests and scrape the depths of depravity.

News coverage (press and TV) in this country has lost its way over the past 20 years or so and it is a shame as we had the best in the world.

Unfortunately they now feed what people want and this seems to enable them to provide it (basic supply and demand) so at the end of the day it is all driven by what the public wants even though not many people would say the act of bugging should be justified,.

What is needed is a press body with some real teeth. Large fines dont work because most papers are a part of a much larger media organisation that can afford it. Perhaps banning them from publishing for set periods would be more of an incentive e.g. if a paper is found to be hacking phones it is banned from publishing for a month.

I'm really glad to hear that a number of advertisers are now pulling their adverts from the NOTW. I hope it is something that builds

Beachcomber - I fear you are right

FaerieB - There is always a choice, at the end of the day you choose which media streams you want to get your information from. You could choose a high end paper like the Times or the Independent, you can choose a scare monger like the Mail or the Express or you can choose trash like the News of the World or the Sun. The masses have chosen to read the trash papers who as a result are in an arms race to dig up the juiciest trash.

The ultimate choice though is to walk away from newspapers all together. The only papers that come in to my house are the local papers which are free of this type of journalism (so far)

Couldnt agree more - hopefully this will make more people reconsider their choice of papers and as a result the journalism they support.

Lots of campaigns on Facebook to boycott the NoW so who knows, Facebook and other social media has been known to cause a stir or two

This whole issue has appauled me
I heard it reported that the advertising revenue was worth at LEAST £1 MILLION per day

With all the blue chip companies pulling out I cannot see the paper seeing out the month

Unless it is propped up by Mr Murdoch himself, losing £1 million per day along with a massive drop in sales just isnt sustainable.....

Good ridence I say. It reminds me of the Suns reporting of the Hillsborough Disaster......
to this day I believe the Sun only sells around 3 copies per day in the city:cool:

News of the World says it will cease publication after this week end.

Breaking news ....

.... shows the power of advertisers eh, and public revulsion.

Course, it's us, the public, that buy the trash in the first place, creating the market...

Gord knows what trashy pulp will replace it!!

... but it's good to know even in this day and age, there are still lines that when crossed, is just one step too far.

Regardless of Fords motivation, and I agree these companies always have an eye on the bottom line, well done them for having the balls to make a stand, and get things rolling.....

And wait for the all new Sunday edition of the Sun newspaper to be published!

I'm very disappointed with Tesco's refusal to stop advertising with the NOTW. I hope they suffer as a consequence.

There is also the small matter of the Dirty Digger's plan to buy BSkyB.
NotW will rebrand and relaunch, otherwise lots of journos and printers out of work.
Rebekah Wade will remain in situ. She knows where the bodies are buried so will not be binned.

Very true - the closure of teh NOTW is nothing more than a News Corp exercise in damage limitation. A sunday edition of the Sun will surely follow after a suitable delay.

Who would have thought this would have ended in the demise of a paper that has been in business for 168 years?

This got me thinking, would the have happened in such a short time without the internet. In the days before the internet, perhaps a few people would have protested outside the offices of News of the World and key advertisers, may a petition, a march and eventually after months or years something would have happened.

Now individuals can harness the internet and social media to quickly gain mass inertia, meaning organisations such as Ford are afraid not to listen in case people stop buying their cars, outcome = the paper is forced to shut.

Very sobering for all business owners.

This got me thinking

What got me thinking was why they shut up shop so quick.

Over the years the NotW have been involved up to their necks in the most disgusting sleeze - their reporting has taken scumminess to an altogether new low, and they couldnt give a toss.

Then the phone hacking story breaks, they are accused (everything is just accusations at this point) of hacking a murdered girls voicemail, and bam, a large advertiser pulls out, and it's shut up shop.

They must be pretty sure this is only the very tip of the iceberg.

Quote "Very sobering for all business owners."

How so?

My thoughts are:

Using social media (facebook, twitter), consumers put pressure on companies like Ford not to advertise in the News of the World. Not so long ago this would not have influenced a large global business. However, do to the speed in which members of social media can mobilise a campaign (that can hurt a company's sales, reputation, etc), many companies are becoming increasing intune with the customers and try to act in an appropriate way.

The feedback has gone from one way to two way. That is why many large companies invest heavily in facebook exposure.

The reason I think it is sobering is that any business large (or small) needs to be on best behaviour or risk the wrath of their customers.

Simon

PS - I also think like one of the posts in this thread that there will be a Sun on Sunday in months to come.

Although we are told the NOTW was still making a profit, all newspapers days are limited in their present form. Neither do I think the NOTW was the only paper to have benefitted financially from the obnoxious relevations that are coming out. It is likely that other tabloids must have been offered and benefitted from phone hacking, etc. The culture at the NOTW probably made it the worst and by closing it down, News Corporation is probably hoping that further revelations will not be made.

The real prize however is control of television, where most of the media money will be made in the future. I would say that under no circumstances should News Corporation be allowed to increase their stake in BSkyB, but I am not hopeful that this will happen under the present government. Can anyone say that the owners of this company are 'fit and proper persons' to own any TV channels, when they let this kind of culture happen at the NOTW.
