Best way to build numbers on Facebook and Twitter?

Hello everyone,

I am trying to build my numbers on Facebook and Twitter but it is quite difficult getting people to like your page or follow you on twitter, has anyone got any good methods of getting people to like these pages?

Thanks

I have found this list :

20 Ways to Increase Your Facebook Likes and Engagement

  1. Advertise on Facebook to get more “likes”. This is the quickest way to grow your fan base.
  2. Rotate your ads “DAILY” people get tired of hearing the same thing in conversation so change your ad! Conversion (CTR) rates can drop by 50% after the first 24 hours. Do not “set and forget”
  3. Add Facebook Social Plugin Box to your Blog and Website (60% of my “likes” are achieved this way)
  4. Free exclusive video that can only be viewed if you like the page.
  5. Run a competition. Everyone likes a competition
  6. Make it obvious on a custom landing page by providing a big bold “Like our Page”
  7. Initially ask friends and family to like your page. A bit overdone but essential at the beginning
  8. Offer a free ebook to obtain a “like” (just like you should be doing for email subscriber acquisition)
  9. Post content from your blog to Facebook whenever you write a new post. Facebook users love receiving new content on Facebook without having to go looking for your blog. Treat Facebook as an extension of your blog.
  10. Provide enticing high resolution photos. Compelling photos that are appropriate for your target audience will keep them coming back and make them share and so drive more likes from their friends
  11. Ask questions regularly using Facebook’s native question app.
  12. Include a link to your Facebook page in your email signature
  13. Provide a compelling welcome video on your Facebook landing page
  14. Simple but often missed: Add a “follow us” on Facebook button near the top of your website and blog pages
  15. Create an incentivised “Like” page that gives people a reason to like your page.
  16. Include the Facebook like button on your email HTML template so that people can like your facebook page from the regular email newsletter
  17. Add a large custom banner to your blog and website asking to “Like
  18. Add a link to your Facebook page as one of your three LinkedIn website links that are part of your LinkedIn settings in your profile
  19. Add a newsworthy update that is relevant for your industry or market niche to your Facebook page every day
  20. Offer “Special” including discounts to Facebook fans. The majority of Facebook users “like” a page to obtain a discount
Hope this helps

TCC,

my input would be is to get your social buttons out there, on your website, emails and other forms of communication (business cards, letter heads) as if people don't have them infront of them then they won't follow. Also try and offer something when people sign up i.e a free tip

Also don't try and sell your services - try to interact with people.

if you want to get more facebook likes & more followers on twitter then you should post quality content on these social network. Don't just advertise. Spread awareness, Educate people on various topics, help them get their answers, provide them useful links, brochures, white papers.
All these will increase your authenticity over internet and gradually people will start following and liking you.

This is something that will very much take time.

You need to "talk" to other people online and build up a rapport with them over time. Another way though to get numbers up in general will be through Hashtags. Also, thank people when they do follow and they may respond back and people will see your profile in their thread.

Other ways can be through commenting on a popular news subject at the moment. Do not be controversial through!

One seperate way from this is from immedaitely following an individuals account after you have met them, whether at a meeting or networking event. This can be a sure way to keep in touch and a way which has worked well for me in the past.

Hope these ideas help.

In terms of Twitter i've experimented quite a bit. First you need good content, mix it up a bit and make your tweets a mix of Blog links (preferably your own), info, chatter, twitpic images, support, Q&A, converstaion. Its amazing how many people pay for 100 clicks through adwords when we can get the same with a twitpic of a new product!

Don't make it all "Having jam on toast right now!" but at the same time try and get involved in smalltalk. We use Twitter for support too. We use FreshDesk as 1 agent is free. Its a helpdesk system that integrates twitter right in, allows you to search for terms and create cases out of them. This way you never miss anything anyone is saying about you and you can also reply to people needing help before they even know about you.

Now you need users. If you get the above right then you'll grow organically but to get followers you really need to follow. A great way to do this is to look at whos following you, your competitors or similar themed tweeters, then look at their followers and follow them! You can make this as relevent as you want. Some people get 1000's followers quickly by following anyone but we like to make sure that things are kept as relevent as possible.

You can get 1000+ followers easily like this.

Also a great little book on measuring and timing tweets and posts is Zarrella's Hierarchy of Contagiousness. I think it's kindle only but it looks at how you make yourself contagious in terms of marketing thorugh social media and email. Its a clever little book!

Hope to have helped a bit

I have been told that having good content and generating it frequently is very essential and can actually save a lot of money being poured into SEO sites.
If you can give away rewards, free gifts which are actually your company's products can attract more traffic and eventually more likes to your facebook.
You can use CMS instead of standard html pages to get advantage of blogs, forums etc. on your company's website where you can include facebook, twitter etc. modules for getting likes and help getting them spread.

We ask our customers if they wish to comment on our facebook page like liking it or maybe leaving a comment, some do, some dont, its hard work but thats the way we have gone and slowly we have built some likes and nice comments etc. However we dont sell online our business is shop based, so isnt really reliant on fb and not all customers are on fb anyway.

Its nice to have a page though and all free of course so all good.

Hello
I think that It’s no secret that Facebook is an excellent source to make money online. With over 400 million members, the money is there for the taking. Many online marketers have come out and said that Facebook fan pages are currently the best free way to make money on the site. This is because of their viral nature. In this article, I am going to discuss an effective technique for increasing fans on your page with the intention of taking it viral.

In which article ? :|

It might be worth looking at what Vodaphone did and still does with their Zoo Zoo campaign (http://www.facebook.com/zoozoo) . They created a set of 30 really funny viral videos with these characters doing all kinds of silly things. They started this campaign in 2009 already and they currently have over 3.1 million Facebook fans (which are still growing) and their videos have been watched millions of time on YouTube.

The interesting thing about this campaign is that the characters have given Vodaphone enough material to maintain interest in the campaign and therefore their brand for almost three years now. They regularly post static images of the character in some situation and ask fans to comment. E.g. one of them asks:

Phew! Summer is here and so is the heat.

This Zoozoo decided to get a face pack and take a nap while whistling his favourite song to himself.

How do you cool down when the heat gets too much to handle? -

They got 4327 likes, 253 comments and 482 people sharing the message. Remember, this is a 3 year old campaign still generating that amount if interest.

This campaign also allows them to continually announce new campaigns and products to their fan base. But what they do right is to first entertain, then invite involvement (comment and share) and behind all that, almost unobtrusively, they promote the brand.

How many of the Fans of this campaign would have been Fans if Vodaphone had set up a corporate page about the company?

Why ?
What do you think having "bigger numbers" will do for you ?

In my opinion this is the most intelligent post on this thread, yet has been mostly ignored.

I don't know whatthe OP's product / proposition is, but the question must be 'would you rather shout inconcequential crap at random people throughout the world, or have an intelligent conversation with 5 prospective clients?'

A good friend of mine recently committed to paying £500 per month for social marketing - as a direct result of which I have iscommunicated all my social links because of the constant stream of drivel. Tnhe good news is thay he hasen't noticed because he has 5 million followers, ranging from Thai prostitutes to kis with learning difficulties licking their computer screens in Burnley - not really the target base for computer leasing.

So, before answering you question, what is you target customer and what realistic part does social media play in your strategy?

I have these questions on large numbers of 'random' people:

Does large numbers of 'random' followers say to prospective followers who might be the target audience: 'oh!, this is popular, maybe I should join in'?

What about getting to your target customer via social networking: 'I don't by this product or use this service but I have a friend who does'?

What about changing circumstances as in: 'I've not been in your target audience but guess what, I've go a new job, a new whatever, and now I am and since you've been so good at sharing stuff with me I trust you.'?

Also, even people outside your target audience has the potential to contribute valuable information and share your information with potential customers.

And lastly, NO, you should definitely not shout inconcequential crap (although what this is needs to be defined) but you should be careful not to obsess about only talking to your target audience that you ignore the effect random people might have on getting your message to that target audience.

The simple answer PIngels is, it depends what you are selling and your marketing strategy.

Serendipty can produce good customers, but is far too often used as an excuse for lack of focus. It sort of puts me in mind of the person at networking events who stands in your face and gives you their speil without making any attempt to discover who you are.

I am not trying to rule out Facebook or Twitter (or whatever) as marketing media, but I do think that potential users need to understand the concept of marketing over 'free' hits.

Fantastic reply BM - these guys are deluded. Honestly it's like a popularity contest "Oooh I've got 5,000 followers aren't I amazing."

ps get your mate to talk to me about computer leasing. There that was far more effective than Tw*tter

Most social networking is a waste of time for most businesses. That's not to say it's can't be a tool to pick up business - I have picked up quite a bit from FB. But that was not from my FB page that was from targeting specific groups with members from my target audience.

Just having loads of numbers on you page is a waste of time, I don't think I have generated a single job directly through my facebook page itself, and through twitter have attracted nothing but people trying to flog me stuff.

i LOVE social media marketing. I love Twittering, face booking, interesting, four squaring and a million other. I've made business from it, put a few quid in the bank and enjoyed every minute of it very much. I still do it every day for myself and for clients. What have I learnt?

(deep breath, waiting for the anti's to respond)

Forget numbers. Ignore likes, comments, retweets and follower numbers. Focus on real, human engagement and conversation.

See someone down the pub talking about "me, me, me"? Everyone ignores them. Ditto social media. The key word is "social" - its nothing new, humans have done it since we lost our tails and moved out the caves. Its only the platform thats different.

There are companies around that for 20 quid will get you 8000 twitter followers. Are they ever going to spend money with you? ermmm...nope. If you want to spend £20 doing this, please send it to me instead and I will find you ONE prospect that actually might spend something with you.

Good post Carlos.

The whole concept just frustrates me. You know as well as I do, that there are ways to get 10k twitter followers over night and charge companies a lot of money for doing so. Sadly I find a lot of business these days lacks actual morals, and I could never do this - it simply won't make them a bean in revenue, even when I deliver all these followers, and it would make me look as if i was lacking in moral fibre. I lack lots of things, but fibre isn't one of them! ;-)

Well first the is kudos of having those numbers on your site, second the more LIKES (fans) you have the more reach your facebook updates have.

But how would that sell more wills for me, servers for Jon and for other folks goods & services on here?

My partner is in marketing and her view is that it only works for the big brands - coca cola and the like.

Kudos doesn't put £££ in the bank, and who cares if you have a million fans but they aren't buying your product or service, it is of no use. Who ever thought up that it is a good idea to sucker people into advertising another brand on their website is a a, well actually they're a genius but they are the ones who benefit.

Well firstly I'm no social network evangelist, but as far as I'm concern anything that might help is often worth the effort. You might drop your business in a pub chap or another social meeting, it's the same with facebook a twitter. You have nothing to lose by using it but you also have to decide if the returns are worth it or not.

I do loads of things that from one point of view might not seem worth it. For example I'll spend ten minuites a day on clicking buttons which enable my own site to get viewed by people who do the same. That might bring 500 people to a site 99% of whom have no interest. Thats 1% hit rate and often that makes a big difference.

I genuinely doubt that doing a bit of tweeting for an unestablished big brand would bring in 500 website hits. You would need thousands upon thousands of followers, and they won be the target audience (they probably wont even read the tweet if it is business related.

For the most part it is a waste of time (I learnt that myself - and quickly), non social networking advertising is much better for small and even medium sized businesses.
