Hi,

I wondered if any of you have some tips on taking product photos for an e-commerce site. I've got a load to do (hundreds) and wondering the best way to tackle it. I've read that a light tent cube is the way to go if doing yourself.

Anyone used an external company to get professional images? When I looked at this it seemed quite expensive, especially given the volume I have to do.

Hi Karen

As ever, it's always a decision between investing time, money and practice (lots of it)... against hiring a professional photographer to do the job properly and allowing yourself to get on with running your business.

A light cube is all well and good but what about your lighting set-up? What camera do you have?

Product and Still Life photography is a very specialist area.

I would personally recommend you go to a professional, you don't want poor quality images that degrades the appearance of your products.

DIY route, will be far away from the quality that you will get from a pro, with a studio and professional lighting and cameras, and more importantly knowledge.

On an e-commerce site, the pictures can be very important, get them done properly.

As has been stated already, if you can afford it get them done professionally. However not everyone can afford it to start with, so if not and you are on a really tight budget, get some white sheets and strong lamps and a digital camera and practice yourself.

You will be able to produce half decent images this way that will tide you over and allow you to start selling until you can afford to hire a pro.....

Thanks for all the replies, some very useful information.

If I only had a few to do I'd get them done professionally, but I expect the numbers I have will cost me a small fortune, plus we are constantly adding new items. The images don't really sell the product, they just make the site look a bit cleaner.

I've invested in a light cube, just need to get some lights and I'm going to give it a shot myself. I'm using a Canon 450D DSLR, the only real problem I have with this is flash bounce back and the shadow, so I figure the light box will remove that. I don't really have time to be touching them up myself in Photoshop.

I'll let you know how I get on.
