Im looking into building a school in africa by donating a percentage of the value of an order for cotton or jute bags towards the build of a school.

Is there anyone on here that knows where to start with this or that knows any good organisations that could help me with this.

Yes, I know just the lady you need to speak to, Hayles, lovely lady and an old time member of UKBF, not been active for some time but she was very dedicated to something similar.

Look her up, I know she would luv to help.

Yes, it was not that long ago Hayles was in africa, she even had a blog about it. I don't remember the details of the organisation she was involved with, but I do remember buying a couple of goats :)

Look her up, she'll definitely point you in the right direction.

Also, a charity I rate very highly is The Joliba Trust, though they are more geared towards wells and midwives, etc. they are a great bunch though, so a telephone call might gain some ideas on who to contact.

One final idea is to contact a member here called thirdsectorForums, who runs a charity sector forum, and who has a good knowledge.

Hayles is doing all sorts of stuff and not getting stuck on a forum like us saddos ;) I have to ring the charity actually as I did a system for them. I can get hold of Hayley if need be and I semi frequently catch up with what she is doing.

I am going to sound like a complete b*stard here however I do mean this in a constructive way:-

It is not a good idea to mix your profit making business with a charitable objective. The public are cynical about such schemes to begin with - how much profit £0.01 in the £1.00, depends what you mean profit after "accounting adjustments" etc. This may even lead to you facing criticism for drawing a salary from your own business.

There have actually been a few threads on the forum where people have been involved in similar schemes. I recall one poster was even talking about going to the police.

I am not for one minute suggesting that you do not donate to charity, just that you should keep it a private matter. Donate the company profits if you wish but do not make any promises to do so.

It depends. Is the support consistent with your company's vision and mission statement? If you're selling car accessories, it makes no sense to support a project bringing clean water to a remote African village. If you sell bottled water, however, it makes perfect sense.

Hi Craig,

Have you come across One Water. Run by an amazing guy Duncan Goose. He puts Water supplies into Africa, play pumps, that enable children to go to school not do the chores of walking miles for water. Sounds to me like you two should get together and I am sure that he will help you with your project

Other companies indeed do it but these companies are audited by inpedendant parties or have the deep pockets to support a legal team or PR company to sort it out.

If say, Tesco were accused of promising to pay £0.05 from every sale of baked beans to a donkey sanctuary and then keeping the cash, even it entirely unfounded, their legal and PR machines would go into overdrive. There would be lawyers sliding down firemans poles to issue legal threats left right and centre and marketing managers dragging the chairman to Blackpool to get his picture taken next to a few donkeys.

If the same thing happened to you, what would you do?

All it takes is for one person to get the wrong end of the stick and the reputation you have worked so hard to build up is gone.

Or say next year the cost of your bags increases. You feel you cannot pass the increase to your customers so would you then swallow a loss? - How will pulling out of the charitable scheme look?

Yes I would contact Chris at http://www.allstarkids.org.uk.

He has done this many times in the past and is very nice. I went to Africa with him to scout out projects back when he was with the Andy Cole Childrens Foundation working in conjunction with Hope for Children and can confirm that he is very thorough. If you pm me with your contact details I can pass them over to him directly if you like.

Whilst on the subject he has come up with a good way of getting funds to the charity by setting up a search engine

It is based on google so you would get the same results as you would by searching google but the charity gets adsence revenue on any adverts clicked, so you can the children help by doing what you would do normally.

It is a great thing you want to do and it really will make a huge difference to the children that go to the school you build.
