Hello all,

I've joined the forum as I've started a new e-commerce website - impossiblebottle.co.uk.

I have a unique, niche product that I'm quite certain you'll never have seen before!

Looking forward to contribute to the forums in any way I can...

Phil,

have you thought about selling to (specialist) retailers?

As Eagle said... I'd love the idea of having something I can choose to have in the bottle.

A gift for a friend - he loves bikes, I could choose a miniature helmet to have dangling instead of the padlock?

Would really open up the doors :)

I agree. It'd be more personal to customers if you were able to do requests.

Visited your website... great to see the pics of what can go in bottles. :D

I think thats a fantastic idea, I know it creates difficulty in managing to perform the trick, and that it is all done by tricks, but if you could manage a few requests that really would create some extra interest.

I like the idea, it wont make much money but I like it. Its a hobby that you can make money out of, which is alright by me any day of the week.

I think there might be huge potential for this.

I know ships in bottles have been around for years - but for me this is a whole new concept.

If you can provide the sales to start with, and offer custom bottles.
Maybe find a way to bring the cost down slightly? (No idea how much it costs to make a bottle like that?!) Then take it to retailers (choose them carefully!)

I could see this on the shelves for Fathers Day (for example).

this looks great and i enjoyed googling to see how its done

<<Spoiler removed by mod: It's clever, but don't give away his secret!>>

anyway, I suggest....
..you sell box kits of 'make your own bottle....'
sell the bottle, cards, instructions, a tennis ball, etc...
...im sure in the long run this would be a better seller and also cheaper to sell, and also so many people would love a pack and have a go at doing it themselves... people are too lazy to do it themselves but if their brother/wife/dad gave them a kit, they might just try and give it a go??

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the feedback - I'm finding it really helpful as I'm just starting out.

Regarding the cost, as I point out in the FAQs, the cost is largely for my time (the one with the steel bolt takes around 3-5 hours to complete). I needed to make sure I priced them to reflect this, whilst being careful not to make them too inaccessible. To be honest, pricing was one of the most difficult decisions I had to make.

Regarding retailers, I think I'll wait and see how individual sales to the public go, and then consider larger retailers/distributors if things don't go so well.

A number of you have mentioned bespoke bottles. I agree that this would be a wonderful service to offer, but as you can appreciate it's very much dependent on the object to be bottled, and the laws of physics of course! It's certainly something I'll consider though.

Thanks again,

Phil

PS. I noticed a 'spoiler' explaining how my bottles were made was removed by a mod. I'm not too bothered really - after all it's relatively easy to find out how it's done! However, I'd suggest that actually doing it is a different kettle of fish. And actually doing it and ending up with a pack of cards that still looks brand new is nigh impossible...
