WP 3.7 auto updates

Any thoughts on this? Should I just let it flow or is there a downside?

And it's not going to do themes or plugins is it? (Well, themes are ok, child themes are safe but modified plugins...and the safe 1.9 version of NGGallery...)

It's only for wp updates, it may move to plugins and themes etc in the future.

It's thoroughly been tested in the release versions so should be ok. It has a fail safe built in as well, if an update fails it installs the previous version again.

It's a question of business risk.

However much something has been tested, there will always be edge cases that result in failure.

We would never allow auto updates of anything in business critical systems. Updates would first be applied in a test environment, and only if all is well there, applied to the production systems.

^^Agree with that. I have a number of testsites where I can fiddle with things. All you have to do is set up a subdomain on your main site and install wordpress. Copy everything across and make sure you block the search engines. You now have a safe place to experiment and play.

Now much better informed about the whole auto update thing.

Wordpress wil NOT autoupdate major changes. The auto update will only apply to minor changes (to fix securlty bugs for example).

This means it will auto update 3.7 to 3.7.1 (a minor change) but it will not auto update 3.7 to 3.8 (a major change).

Minor updates are quite rare and won't break your site as they don't affect functionality.

WP also say (at WPTavern I think) that updates might at worst break a plugin, but this will be a red flag about the plugin's compatibility with the core WP code.

My website auto-updated over night (3.7 to 3.7.1) and I've checked it, and all is good.

As has been stated, it is only the core WP files that are updated, and a lot of those are to close security holes that have been exploited by hackers, so I can only see this as a good feature.

Same here, 14 sites autoupdated last night without issue so going to upgrade everybody else to 3.7 today.

But why would you want to do this?

The feature just for minor updates usually to fix security bugs. I'd rather WP did this whithout me having to worry about them.

As I said, I hadn't looked at it.
I presume it's for people who approach WP in a different way to you, so far about 765 of them in 24 hours.
I merely mentioned it, repeating the mention I saw elsewhere from a very experienced (if rather prickly) WP dev.
