Would you use a designer/seo who spams forums

depends, if they are new to online forums in general and they aren't aware of the etiquette then I would (I would let them know it's bad practise to do it and see if they change the habit) but if they keep doing it then no.

It's not even as if they are posting anything of value.

You know the kind who replies to every post they can find, no matter if it's old, out of date or come to a logical conclusion?

No, no and more no :D

If I want something website based I try first of all to use a full forum member but if not I will use a free member who has made a useful contribution to the forum.

Incidentally it isn't just the website brigade who spam forums as the accountants are just as bad

Just for information, I am trying to learn and surely am entitled to my opinion, even if others do not agree. I thought that the whole idea of a forum was to give opinion and best advice, it may be that you do not agree with anything that I post, but I am reading others posts and when an argument occurs within the forum as per one post that I saw (not involving anything I was saying), I gave my opinion. Obviously someone who has 19,819 posts doesn't like it as I didn't quite agree with their point of view.
I'm sure they will rise to even this entry but they will not get a reply to that reply as I would be fueling their lust for argument.

It's not about what you're posting, it's the thread boosting (old threads which have long since died), there is no forum rule but it's bad practise to revive threads from weeks ago or months ago just to post something which won't have any impact. Try to post on topics which are under 2 weeks old and haven't been "resolved".

As a potential SEO punter with a basic understanding or SEO..........

No, I wouldn't as, from my point of view, they demonstrate the level of service and knowledge they would provide you in their posts (e.g. badly spelt, spammy, useless or out of date info, the kind of person who would be likely to harm your sites rankings).

However, I have used a member of this forum who regularly contributes good and accurate info (and, to date, they are the only SEO person I've ever used who produced the results they said they would!).

I think a punter needs to have a basic understanding of SEO to be able to sort the good from the bad (there does still seem to be a bit of a 'luck' element to finding a good SEO though?).

I'm confused about the title of the thread and the approach on his post.
What would be the purpose if i use a designer or seo? o_O
These are in different departments but working together in optimizing the website.:)

The thread was directed at a new member who over the course of a few days revived old threads and posted a lot of irrelevant and sometimes in accurate info.

There are loads more though that like to post opinions even if they have nothing else or new to add and they always remind me of donkey in the Shrek films leaping up and down shouting "pick me, pick me"

    *Checks thread dates before posting*

    I see this a lot on other forums and it's slightly aggravating, especially if you're a moderator. To me, it's a combination of them wanting to;

    A. Have their name/company linked to anything (vaguely) [insert industry]-related content

    B. Boost their post count, either so they have more forum klout, or more likely so they can create a signature/post a spammy link to their site

Marketing through forums isn't about going round shouting about your services, it's about helping others, contributing to the discussions/community, and showing that you know what the hell you claim you know.

Also, I'm put off when faceless agencies post on forums, mainly because I personally like to know who I'm dealing with. I probably wouldn't hire SEOExpertsInMyCity, but I probably would hire Joe Johnson, an SEO expert who's active and insightful, who happens to work for SEOExpertsInMyCity.

Forftunately with the move to the new forum they can't do B but I have spoken to the "offendee", they just wanted to give opinions on different aspects and wasn't an intentional spam. I advised them to look at the post dates as bringing up old posts is bad etiquette as the thread is normally considered finished.
