wordpress?

everyone keeps banging on about wordpress and how easy it is to use, so i thought i'd go ahead and download/install it on a spare website that i've got. But, i can't get the darn thing to work, after initially failing to get it on the darn website i've now got to the database bit...but i've found the host can only give me a database for £199 a year  added to the £69 a year for the hosting  which works out expensive for a test.

so is this how everyone else does it? because its darn more expensive and complicated than i thought, i thought you just unpacked it, stuck it in the root folder and uploaded it..but you can't..you have to do some complicated trickery and a rain dance!

i might stick to my basic html, they may not be glossy websites but still..easy to do.

£199 for a database  You do need a db to run wordpress, I would just get a free account from wordpress.com... You can't make your own themes but you can do most of what wordpress.org does.

i wont mention who it is, because they've been very good with hosting packages over the last few years that i've used them but each database is £199 and takes 48 hours to set up.

didn't know there were some freebie setups on wordpress so i'll go and have a look!

it just seems a bit more complicated than i thought, i'm fine with ftp and uploading html files, root folders, htdocs etc etc but this has confusled me some what.

£199 for a mysql database is a complete rip off in my opinion. Mysql databases are pretty much standard kit with Linux hosting nowadays, with accounts offering at least one, and many hosts giving you several/dozens.

48 hours to set up a database is a bit of a joke as well. Using an industry standard hosting control panel like Cpanel you can instantly set a database up with just a few clicks, when you're used to doing it it takes less than a minute :)

I'd suggest looking for a modern host with up to date facilities.

As has been said above, you really do need to move hosts. Cheap, reliable hosting is readily available and will usually come with Wordpress without an additional charge. I was with FH until they started to sting customers with prices like that. Moving hosts isn't necessarily a big thing but you do need to think about it.

Hope that helps

Are you sure they're not charging for an MSSQL db not MySQL? One of the semi-basic editions of MS SQL is £15/month for the license which comes to £180 and then presumably a setup charge.....?

We're now on TSOhost as recommended by Dom from Vidahost (thanks btw) and using their grid hosting, but they do linux hosting as well for about £15 a year and I think it comes with push-button WP installer. They're a great company too.

Obvious win imo.

it was a 150mb database for £199 a year, i've got another hosting company that i've bought a bulk user account from so i'll go have a gander to see if they have a built in database!

it's just a bit of a faff on really, html/css is still easier for me it seems.

Once you're over the £199 database issue - yes it sounds expensive :) - there's plenty of sites out here with great advice on getting started.

WordPress.org
Smashingmagazine.com
Catswhocode.com

These are just a few that spring to mind.
