You can add or delete pages.
The easiest thing to do is try one of the free custom templates that are available and have a play around with them.
Sometimes designing your own template using something like Artisteer may be your best bet. Fantastic software and very easy to use.

Some of the WP templates are more flexible than others, but you can add pages on all... some have their own support and forums as they can become quite complicated the more you try to customise them. If you are confident at changing code or you are prepared to embark on a steep learning curve then there is plenty to keep you occupied, equally, if you are new to WP then you can customise, add pages change formats and colour ways on many of the free templates.

Take a bit of time having a look at the hundreds of free templates, there are some brilliant ones before parting with any cash for a custom build; if after you ave tried a few, you are still not happy with the look, then perhaps look at something more bespoke.

I often find that because of the amount of time spent looking through the volume of free templates you are often better as Marcoose says looking at commercial themes which you can pick up for $30 or so and they tend to be a lot more flexible to adapt if you are not familiar with css or html.

I would add please be careful on buying/downloading wordpress themes from third party websites, while many are legitimate and do offer good value for money there was a spate of websites offering cheap/free themes last year that contained virus'.

I would advise always check reviews on 3rd party websites before downloading and ideally get someone to look over the files you have downloaded who has some technical knowledge.

How do they work, before I buy one? Can you delete and add pages or do you have to have it exactly as it comes?

My personal choice are the range of WooTheme designs. They look great and are built around a solid framework - making it easy to add extra bits and bobs.

If you end up buying a WordPress theme let us know how you get on.

Theme Forest seem to want a telephone number, but don't offer a UK dialling code as an option. Any suggestions?

Also, do templates come with instructions as to how to get them onto your hosting etc?

Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like you may still be learning how to use wordpress. Basically templates (or themes) will have, or should have, the instructions on what to do. If you already have a site set up using wordpress then you should be able to upload the zipped theme using the admin side of your wordpress area. The theme is then automatically unzipped and you choose or activate the theme from there.
This link will help http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes

However, the best way is to manually unzip the template (so you end up with the folder of extracted files) and then upload them usually into the theme directory using FTP. Then login to your wordpress admin and activate the theme from there

Yep, I'm a complete newbie in this area, hence the stupid questions, sorry! I've got a website at the moment but it was made with a builder package that came with the hosting, so I'm going to buy a template and get that up on there - much better!

What I would suggest JSO is that you do check with your hosting provider first to make sure that you can run theme updates etc. So you need to be sure that you understand some more about the file system, FTP and so forth. Depending on who you host with, they should be able to give you the answers you need.

What I would suggest (I'm assuming this is therefore a NEW WEBSITE) so try some free themes from the wordpress site. This way you will learn what and how to do things.

Some good freebies are iFeature http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ifeature
EvoLve (or evolve) http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/evolve
Clean Simple White http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/clean-simple-white

These are just 3 themes that are quite easy to work with, and considering they are free, not bad at all for you to learn and practice on.
