Hi all, can woocommerce handle a big catalog of products.

We are starting a new dropshipping venture where our customers will order through our new site. In time can woocommerce handle 5000+ products

To answer your question, yes it can handle 5000+ products and much more in fact. It is all about how you scale the store/website and how your host handles the performance and storage of the product data and orders/transactions.

As others have said, WooCommerce can support a huge amount of products, but there are many other things to think about to setup at this scale; e.g. inventory management and how you add/edit products quickly, integrating with ERP/accounting systems etc to keep track of sales and accounting.

I'm assuming from your post that this is a B2B site, but if you need to market or sell the products elsewhere (eBay, Amazon, Google) that adds much more to think about around merchant feeds and integrations.

This sounds like a big project that needs end to end mapping first; e.g. customer/sales acquisition, product setup/merchandising, order/sales management, then creating the site infrastructure and a website that converts well to support all this...

it can, but I always recommend WooCommerce for small shops only simply because the database structure is in WordPress style making it non-ideal when writing scripts for management, also the built in product management is not ideal for large amounts of products either.

For medium to large stores I always recommend an ecommerce system specifically for ecommerce instead with cleaner database structures and more intuitive administration features, such as OpenCart.

Out of all the ecomm choices which is the most efficient to use, in terms of ordering management, speed, high number of products, wholesale options?

I'd also need to have something that allows customers to download images, shipping option that are work off the RRP price of a product etc

You'd need to produce a proper spec, or at least a set of requirements, then get someone to do the analysis for you and make recommendations; as no one can answer from this short detail; e.g. efficient to use in what way, to buy, to merchandise, to build, to maintain, what are the wholesale options for customers?

It's the same regards shipping that works off RRP, what does that mean; e.g. will shipping prices change by product RRP, will the service/carrier change by RRP, are you going to show different prices for different customers, how will this work, discounts by log in, voucher codes etc.

An ecommerce web project needs to have detailed requirements and an outline of how functionality needs to work for you and your customers, without this anything is a guess and projects like this are prone to massive cost/time overrun or failure if not planned properly.

You'll probably need several plugins to achieve this in WordPress/WooCommerce or custom PHP work, OpenCart will need PHP development based on your spec, the spec is key...
