Why are people so in love with google?

Simple - it does what it says on the tin, nowt else.

When you go to the Google sites, you get a (very) simple, unambiguous, uncluttered web page and you know what to do with it. Links to additional content are there but unobtrusive.

Go to any of the others and you're beset with advertisements, value-added content and other such nonsense which, frankly, I'm not the slightest bit interested in.

They certainly were before this 'jagger' update thing TopHat, not so sure about them just now though. I was searching for a forum with mortgage information earlier, but the results google was giving me were useless and ended up using Msn.co.uk for the first time in I don't know how long.

I've found Google to be wildly innacurate and it tends to favour the 'paid-for' and spammed-up placings. They also take forever to update.

So I switched to MSN Search about a year ago and haven't looked back.

As an example of how fast they index sites, I checked my ranking on one of my sites yesterday and it was around tenth place. I updated some things to optimise SEO then waited 20 minutes and searched on MSN again. The site was now fourth place.

That wasn't just lucky - MSN visits sites much more often than Google.

Adverts you say?...

Out of interest, do a keyword search for your own site in Google, then compare with MSN. Might be interesting.

Depends on who the "people" are. Web sites love Google because it provides over 50% of the web's search engine traffic in a one stop shop.

General users, well most tend to do what everyone else does and most people use Google.

It has always been my preception that the less savvy surfer will use MSN Search as this is what tends to be the default search engine you get if you click the Search button in Internet Explorer.

I tend to imagine it is those who are a bit more clued-up in the use of the net will be the ones who use Google.

If I'm right then, on that basis, the search engine you taregt your pages at may well depend on the type of audience you are trying to attract to your site.

Anyone got any thoughts on that?

I've always found Google very good for specific searches (much better than it's rivals)

I have often thought similar and gave other sites a look in - but always reverted back to Google. They must be doing something right!

I think the unclutteredness (is that a word!?!) of Google is a huge factor. Ask Jeeves has so much advertising it's untrue (can't stand a search engine that places paid for adverts above regular listings - defeats the whole purpose) and Yahoo has drastically dropped in accuracy.

MSN is the one to watch, although I think they will have to do something very major and new to become top dog.

Ran a search for my main keyword on different engines:

msn.co.uk - my site is listed at no. 1
msn.com - my site is listed at no. 2
Yahoo.co.uk - my site is listed at no. 8
Yahoo.com - my site is listed at no. 8
Ask.com - my site is listed at no. 15
Google - was no. 6 until 17th October, now can't be found in the top 200!!!

Just because of losing my spot on Google, the site traffic has dropped by 50%.

That's why it is important.
