We have been training down here in the heat .!!!!!
    I hope you have !!!!
If not come down here and train on the beaches and hills with us :D
It was cooler this weekend so I trained with a track suit and a hooded top dressed like an eskimo !! They argue about this training techinic in the summer but I do believe in it a lot :D
    I'm old skool !!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried running the other day and felt like I'd aged about 50 years. Nothing like getting an injury and having it throw off your physique. Can't wait to get back in the game though. I might have to take you up on the running on the beach, it is one of my favorite places to train.

Monday saw me attempt a sub 25 minute 5k. Got 4k into it roughly on time, and the bloody machine stopped. Most of our machines are set for 30 minutes, I was on one of the few that are set for 20.

A bit of a physical day at work yesterday, and wasn't in the mood today. Did the first 4300m at 11kmh on a 1% slope, then moved up to 12.5kmh for the last 700m.

Have y'all read Born to Run about the Tarahumara and ultra-runners in general? These guys are running 100 miles+ at a time. Insane. I'm a 5K man myself. I recommend Nike Free trainers too, they simulate barefoot running, and greatly help to reduce running injuries. :)

Not working, but only just managed the 10k. My legs were hurting like hell at the end, which I guess is better than it hurting my chest and breathing. I was doing physical work yesterday afternoon up and down a ladder, so that probably took some toll as well as yesterday's run.

    57:17 for the 10k.

Not in the game at the mo but I love running, it's the best feeling ever - especially when you finish and you get that lovely feeling you could go back out again!

We have woodlands here so nice to warm up going downhill then push those muscles going uphill.

Must get out again, enjoy peeps

Oh Running thread. I wouldn't mind getting in on this.
From Cardiff so do all my running round there. Not too many hills (thank god) Stats:
    Done 1 marathon - Rotterdam marathon 2012 - 4.32
    1 half marathon - Llanelli Half 2012- 1.42
    10k - Cardiff 10k 2012 - 43.49
    5k - Treadmill - 18.55 (last week)

Prefer the shorter distances nowadays, doing the Cardiff 10k on the 8th September. Don't suppose anyone else is doing that?

Did a gentle 5k yesterday, around 28 minutes. I was concerned with the heat, though the aircon was pretty good. The previous place I've stayed around here only has aircon at the "weights" end of the gym. Sun was setting, and the Burj Kaliff was lighting up as I was running.

Day off today (beer and pizza instead. Don't say I don't indulge in the local culture when I'm travelling!), but will aim to run again tomorrow evening, then on Thursday before a night flight home.

Ran on Tuesday, and was hoping to do a 10k before flying home last night. Instead I spent two hours trying to get back into Dubai, in order to leave again. I managed to pick up three exit stamps and two entry stamps yesterday, having left Dubai, entered Oman, left Oman, entered Dubai and left again all on the same day.

Failed to do a 5k yesterday. Didn't feel good at the start, and hit the emergency stop button by mistake. I know they need to be easy to hit, but they seem a little too easy to me.

Struggled through a 10k today. I'm on holiday next week, but will take my running gear and either go out on the streets or use a treadmill to burn off the beer and wine.

    Still here? Ok then.

Now regularly doing a 10k at the weekend. Did one on Christmas Eve, a 5k on the 27th and another 10k on NYE.

I changed gyms at the start of the month, as I've been paying £50/month to use a treadmill. They've loads of other facilities, including a swimming pool, but I only ever use the treadmill. Now I'm paying £18/month.

10k on Saturday in just over 53 minutes, and a 5k before work today. Now aiming to put more hills into the run during the week, and increase the distance a bit at weekends. Unfortunately the machines only let you go for 60 minutes, which is a bit of a pain.

Yes Mike Hills !! That what does the trick

Yes, I really need to get that side sorted to make it easier when I'm outside. I was in California in November and ran along the coast a couple of times (though fell A over H on the last run). Running outside is definitely harder than a treadmill. If the weather wasn't so bad here (just lots of rain), I'd probably have not joined another gym and just gone outside. I'll hopefully be able to do that around May/June time.

Wasn't quite sure what this thread was at first. Now I can see its MIkeJ's running diary!

Anyway, I'm another nutter who thinks people who ride bikes must be so bored. Its much more fun to run and look around at the world.

Doing about 35 mile a week training for another 1/2m. It definitely relaxes me. Today was wet and windy so I wimped out, but most mornings I am out at around 6.30.

MikeJ - I find treadmills much harder than footpath/road.

Is that 5 per day? I thought rest days were important? I usually aim to run 2-3 days per week, and rarely run on consecutive days. I've never really been much of a runner, but fancy doing a 10k and/or half marathon this year, and possibly doing my first marathon next year for my 50th birthday.

Rest days are important if you are covering the miles - I usually do 5 days a week, but if I feel like it I might do 3 or 4 miles of gentle on the 6th day. Lots depends on how much energy you are using each run.

Do you need a training plan for 1/2m? Let me know if you do. Running mileage at a constant speed is not really helpful, you need to build in different pace and effort. You can calculate your predicted 1/2 m time here based on shorter runs. Then you can set yourself an achievable target and train accordingly. I am more than a bit older than you so there is no question of me doing a marathon! I know how I feel at the end of a half and definitely do not have the willpower to do it all again immediately.

Thanks, I'll come back to you if I go for it. I do play with the speeds a bit, which I find easier on a treadmill, obviously. Yesterday I kept the speed constant and moved between flat and 1% slope. I always speed up towards the end. I don't think it would take much to get up to a half marathon, I'm still reasonably fresh at the end of a 10k.

May do at the weekend, I only get time for longer runs then. I'm planning a 5k tomorrow morning, and will see how I feel on Saturday. I've been looking at keeping the speed up and putting more hills in, going for power now rather than speed.

That would be the first 5k at 12kmh, then the second 5k at 12.5. That's probably achievable.... I'll be back!

Hmmm, that's interesting. I "learned" to run (I've never really been a runner, this is all new to me) by doing a walk/run plan over 6 weeks. Ok, I did it over 10 years, but it's a 6 week plan that I kept starting and stopping. Rotating between say 10.5 (which used to be painful, but is now a gentle jog) and 13 or 14 may be a challenge.

Will have a go at that tomorrow, and report back.

Forgot what I was supposed to do, but went for...

    1min at 11.5kmh
    1 min at 12.5
    1 min at 11.5
    2 mins at 12.5
    2 mins at 11.5
    3 mins at 12.5
    3 mins at 11.5
    2 mins at 13
    2 mins at 11.5

Felt pretty crap when I first started (really didn't want to be there today), but I was at 14kmh at the end of 5k, and recovered pretty quickly.

Will see how my day's going tomorrow, but may go for a fast 10k.
