Which host is best for......

I have a wordpress site

I need a host where it is easy to

301 redirect the non www to the www

and create user friendly url's rather than the numbers and letters word p creates itself

Any ideas ?

Any host that offers WHM/Cpanel will allow you to easily set up a www 301 redirect in the control panel, with many others, it may require you to manually insert it directly into the .htaccess file which isn't a complicated task if you had to do.

The platinum SEO plugin or All in one SEO plugin for Wordpress both allow you to create search engine friendly URL's and don't have anything to do with the host you use.

he told me I needed to insert code into the site. I tried loads none worked I have not got time to mess about anymore

Wordpress does this for you. Just make sure you have an empty .htaccess in your root directory. WP sets up the canonical tag and you set the user friendly urls in your settings and pages.

This is my issue, I don't have any access to htaccess file.

It's windows hosting,

I don't know much about hosting to be honest but it seem I need Linux and acres to at ht folder in order to have a site as it should be

Windows servers support .htaccess with a third-party application, various options for the host. We have supported .htaccess for years using ISAPI_ReWrite costs next to nothing and does the job.

Well there's your problem... get a real OS :-)

I think under windows it's htaccess without the leading period.

In my cpanel, there is redirect icon under domains, perhaps you also have something similar?

I haven't done and IIS config for yonks, so can't help there.

I don't recommend my UK hosting (and I think they may be on here) - I'll be changing at some point...

Another vote for Vidahost.

301 redirect is a one or two click breeze through c-panel.

Also agree with ZigoJacko - All in one SEO plug will (easily) let you do what you want to on a Wordpress site.

I have the all in one plugin on the site now, but for some reason I couldn't get the friendly url's to work, is it someting to do with the permalinks?

Wordpress and 301 redirects should be a breeze for almost every host on the net. Leaves you with a bounty of options.

AFAIK permalinks needs an htaccess file. If it's not there they don't work - assuming apache, if IIS I'm not sure how/if it works. If you don't have FTP access, then I'd suggest trying support for your host and ask them to create htaccess.

Wordpress creates both a .htaccess for Linux and a web.config file for Windows hosted sites. I use Wordpress on both.

You don't need FTP access. To change to friendly URLs you need to go to Settings > Permalinks and choose an option. I use the Custom Structure option with /%postname%/ as the URL.

AllinoneSEO has nothing to do with this but is a useful plugin so I'd keep it installed.

We use Hostmonster which has been seamless with our many Wordpress sites.

Re: Friendly URLs. Log into the back end of your wordpress and scroll down the left hand side until you reach "Settings". There's a subcategory there called "Permalinks". Click on that and select "Custom Structure"

Put /%postname%/ into the box and you should be away.
